About the Book

**********

After achieving regular successes against convoys in the North Atlantic during its first four missions, Rolf Mützelburg's U-203 succeeded in several torpedoing attacks directly on the coast of Canada at the end of 1941. Its commander won the knight's cross. To act durably on the coasts of the United States during its sixth patrol, on March 24, 1942, the U-203 is the first U-Boot to be refueled at sea by another submarine. In July 1942, it was in the Caribbean, during his seventh combat mission, that Mützelburg obtained his greatest results. He adds the oak leaves to his decoration, but stubbornly refuses to disembark as Admiral Dönitz asks him to. He is then the most decorated of the German submarine weapon to return to combat. His desire to stay with his men cost him his life during an accident at sea that remained unique in the history of underwater weapons: because of the roll, he accidentally killed himself after hitting a ballast with his head while diving from the kiosk. For the following missions, he was replaced by his former second in command, Hermann Kottmann. Despite advances made by the Allies in armament and detection by the time it went into combat in late 1942, U-203 would manage to make two more combat patrols.

This U-Boot will be sunk during the eleventh and last, by the joint action of an aircraft and an allied surface building. Follow the U-203 during its eleven combat missions illustrated by more than 320 photos and documents
