About the Book

The novel describes a relationship between two students in Latin America, Nivek and Florence. The novel describes how the boy bullied in school finds his benefactor in Florence who helps him with kindness as he falls in love with the girl. Then as their love is budding, Nivek realizes that his father has plans for his life, he was born American and his father wants him to go to America and pursue the American Dream. The novel is about the decision that Nivek must make between the girl he loves or the American Dream. It is not an easy decision and this choice will haunt Nivek for the rest of his life. When Nivek leaves her and goes to America, Florence reads The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald in 2003-2004 school year. She likes and feels empathy for the Daisy character in the book, it reminds her that sometimes the people who say love others leave the loved ones behind. Like Gatz left Daisy for World War I in the book and Nivek did the same to her as he left to America. Daisy becomes her heroine, she feels her pain. It seems that Fate or Providence still have a say in Florence and Nivek story as both are reunited in a fateful meeting in the summer of 2004.Nivek is on vacation to see his friends and family. Florence remembers how Nivek told her that she loved her and acts wistfully and saddened with him as her actions and words speak to Nivek´s soul and heart. How can Nivek leave the girl he loves for a second time behind? The question of the decision between America and Florence is asked again. Nivek is oppressed by this choice, why can´t he have both things? But in life you cannot have all. Nivek and Florence both think they can be happy again together like they were in the past. Nivek realizes how Gatsby made the same mistake with Daisy when he reads the Fitzgerald novel years later. "Love Lost" is a love story of perhaps an impossible love. Long after the denouement of their romance, Florence would haunt Nivek for the rest of his life. This is a realistic young adult romance that talks about the joy of loving someone, the passion of falling in love and the deep pain of loss when the lover is let go. The novel talks about love but also about the sacrifices that sometimes are made in pursuit of the American Dream and the American experience. For Nivek to pursue the American Dream, he had to sacrifice the love of his dearest, the woman he loved, but the idea of America and the hope of a better life are things that made Nivek decide for America but the consequence of his choice, the love lost about Florence would linger.
