About the Book

Is love at first sight a myth? In September of 1942, a beautiful blonde co-ed at Michigan State College was strolling around campus, looking for a great snapshot. And there he was. The gorgeous soldier came struttin' through the library doors, heading her way. Snap! She took his picture. He couldn't miss her, the lovely girl with golden hair "dazzling in the breeze." Soon he was standing right before her, the Army corporal from Texas, whom she christened "Glamour Puss." Though they parted after just one week, they wrote to each other every day, from the fall of '42 to the summer of '45, from Michigan and from military bases throughout the States, North Africa, and "somewhere in Italy." She was charming, witty, flirtatious, and bold, always getting into and out of escapades. Though she adored her father, she defied him to marry a man she knew almost solely through letters - a man of integrity, who missed music and night life and dancing with a pretty girl. Her own letters reveal an intimate view of a co-ed's life in the '40's: classes, dorms, dating, attitudes toward women, shopping with ration cards, travel by train - plus an encounter with the FBI. A Love Affair by Letter pulls the reader into life at a turning point for America, into ordinary lives made extraordinary by good humor, sacrifice, and faith in each other. Through 1,000 letters we see a campus cutie become a young woman of strength and independence, in love with a man who thanked God for his "Little Gal" whose words got him through each day. "I love you all there is," they told each other. And it was enough. If you enjoy a true love story, if you want to learn more about America during dangerous and exhilarating times, or if you are a researcher wanting the hard-to-find woman's view of life during World War II, this book is for you. April 17, 1943...I was firmly established in my little seat near the door looking over my notes before class, when the air cadets ambled into the hall and just stood there gaping in at me. Well, I was determined not to look up, you know how 'tis when you're being constantly stared at, you can stand it just so long. Well, that point came, and I merely glanced over, and there they were, grinning like a bunch of six-year-olds. So I just smiled back. Now I wish I hadn't. So help me, it was like a firecracker being set off. Started with, "Hey! Blondie? What's your name?" I continue to look at my notes. Teacher finds his way into the room and stands up front listening to the goings on. "Hey blondie! Where do you live? What's your phone number? What's your name? Etc. etc." So geezle-peezle, I figure I'd better shut them up 'fore prof. starts griping at me. So I said, "Ssshh." Answer: "We don't have to ssshhh. We're at ease."
