About the Book

Imre Kertész (1929-2016), Literatur-Nobelpreisträger von 2002, erlangte nach der Wende internationale Bekanntheit durch den Roman Schicksalslosigkeit (1975). In diesem beschreibt er seine Deportation aus Budapest in das KZ Buchenwald im Jahr 1944. Der eigentliche Gegenstand des Romans ist jedoch nicht Kertész' Haft in dem deutschen Arbeitslager, sondern seine schriftstellerische Arbeit seit Mitte der 50er Jahre in Ungarn, bei welcher er sich der Vereinnahmung durch den nationalen Kulturbetrieb konsequent entzog. Von einer solchen geistigen Exilierung zeugen auch alle seine weiteren Schriften. In seinem letzten fiktionalen Werk, dem Tagebuchroman Letzte Einkehr (2014), versetzt er sich schließlich in die biblische Gestalt des Lot. So erscheinen die in dem Roman enthaltenen Tagebuchpassagen, die von 2001 bis 2009 Kertész' Leben in seiner Wahlheimat Berlin authentisch widerspiegeln, als Nacherzählung der Geschichte von Lots Flucht aus Sodom. Lots Flucht symbolisiert dabei offenbar das Schreiben, durch das Kertész sich gewissermaßen von der Zeit und vom Leben gelöst und in die Weltliteratur gerettet hat. Zugleich ist seine demonstrative Absonderung von der Gesellschaft ein Beispiel für einen eigenen Tod. Der Essay Lot auf der Terrasse des Kempinski ergänzt die Dissertation Ein Leben als Artikulation. Die anthropologische Ikonographie der Schriften von Imre Kertész (Potsdam, 2010), bei deren Fertigstellung Kertész' späte Tagebücher und der Roman Letzte Einkehr noch nicht vorlagen. Als neue Quelle wird nun auch eine größere Auswahl von Interviews der Jahre 1989-2015 hinzugezogen, in denen Kertész sein Werk selbst kommentiert. In einer ausführlichen Analyse seines Gesamtwerks ist zu sehen, wie er persönliche Erlebnisse auf die Ebene der Dichtung oder der Fiktion bringt und damit seine Erfahrungen im Medium der Literatur für spätere Generationen bewahrt.
