About the Book

Prior to the Spanish invasion of Florida in 1513, it is estimated that there may have been as many as 772,000 Timucua of various tribes and dialects. Their territory stretched from Georgia to Central Florida. Fifty years later, the Timucua numbered about 150,00 due to epidemic diseases brought to Florida by the Spanish and from Spanish hostilities. By 1682, there were less than 1,000 Timucua. At the turn of the century no Timucua remained. This story follows the adventures of Polymra, a Timucuan Indian girl entrusted by her people to guard their sacred water source. She encounters both Juan Ponce de Leon and Hernando de Soto on the beautiful island we now call Anna Maria.
About the Author: About the Author Susan Coulis is a polymer clay artist residing in Bradenton, Florida. Originally from Stowe, Vermont she moved to Florida over thirty years ago. The first place Susan lived was beautiful Anna Maria Island. What started as a marketing idea to promote her beaded clay and medallion style jewelry, became a desire to learn more about the Timucuan people and the long, lost history of Ana Maria Cay. Much of the story contains true facts about the Timucuan Indians, as well as the argument that both Juan Ponce de Leon and Hernando de Soto once visited what we now call Anna Maria Island. About the Illustrator Nancy Jean was born in upstate New York, the middle child of seven and was raised on a dairy farm. Nancy's mother Florence encouraged her artistic talent by sending her to a local artist for private lessons at an early age. Nancy later continued her love of drawing through high school and college. Moving to Florida in the 70's, she eventually landed on Anna Maria Island. Life got busy with two wonderful children and a loving husband. This delightful story of Ana Maria Cay has inspired Nancy to pursue her artistic talent once again.
