I found that constantly going from one device to another and from one tab to another was a draining and dismal way to live my life, just like a large number of other people do. I attempted a variety of different methods of self-improvement, including going without his phone for a period of three months, but nothing seemed to help. As a result, I embarked on an incredible journey across the globe to conduct interviews with the foremost authorities on human attention. Through these conversations, I learned that everything we believe we know about this dilemma is incorrect.

We believe that our inability to concentrate is due to a lack of personal determination and that the problem lies with our technology. Even more unsettling is the reality, which is that our attention has been diverted by potent forces from the outside world, which has made us especially susceptible to the attention-grabbing tactics of businesses that are driven solely by the desire to increase their profits. I have discovered that there are twelve fundamental reasons for this crisis, ranging from the decline of mind-wandering to the rising pollution; all of these reasons have contributed to a loss of attention on the part of some of us. I introduce readers to Silicon Valley rebels who have learned to hack human attention as well as veterinarians who diagnose pets with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in lost concentration.
