About the Book

Durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII las reformas borbónicas tuvieron repercusiones en la política, la economía y la sociedad de una Hispanoamérica compleja y heterogénea. Según Halperín Donghi, la posterior crisis y disolución del orden colonial no fue consecuencia de la reacción americana frente a dichas reformas, sino que se produjo porque España no pudo sobrevivir al conflicto europeo. Esa coyuntura, que implicó diferentes reacciones políticas a lo largo del continente, permite observar el papel protagónico que tuvieron los Cabildos en algunas regiones y señalar que uno de los Concejos de actuación relevante en el sentido descripto fue el de Buenos Aires.
Dadas esas consideraciones, hemos centrado el eje de estudio de esta investigación en dicho organismo como actor y gestor de sus acciones políticas. Ambas dimensiones, la de su papel de actor social y la de sus actuaciones, supondrán tener en cuenta su propia composición interna, como condicionante de sus acciones políticas concretas, aspecto que supone indagar quiénes conformaban la élite capitular, mediante qué estrategias eran elegidos para el desempeño de los cargos, y qué lugar
social y económico ocupaban en el espacio bonaerense. Paralelamente, por otra parte, nos permitirán observar si es posible establecer relaciones entre las familias concejiles y las acciones políticas desarrolladas por el Cabildo en la capital rioplatense, entre 1776 y 1810.
