El Regimiento Gurka es sin duda uno de los regimientos del ejército británico con más historia. De forma similar a la Legión Extranjera francesa, sin embargo, ha sido tradicionalmente un regimiento de aventureros y soldados de fortuna, con la simple diferencia de que los gurkas representan solo una etnia minoritaria de la población nepalesa en general, distinguida por una larga y augusta tradición marcial.
