Si se entiende por golpe de Estado la subita interrupcion de las normas juridico-politicas para dar campo a un gobierno que ofrezca otros programas o que desee poner fin a un estado de cosas que no debe prolongarse, los golpes de Estado ocurridos en Colombia desde 1828 hasta 1982, son ocho, asi El primero: lo dio el Libertador Simon Bolivar (27 de agosto de 1828), despues del fracaso de la Convencion de Ocana. . El segundo: lo dio el general venezolano Rafael Urdaneta (10 de enero de 1831), heroe de la independencia, despues del retiro de Bolivar del Palacio de San Carlos. El tercero: (17 de abril de 1854), celebre en la historia de Colombia por la guerra que suscito. Fue dado el por el general Jose Maria Melo al general Jose Maria Obando, su jefe y amigo . El cuarto: ocurrio el 23 de mayo de 1867 cuando una parcialidad del partido liberal apreso al general Tomas Cipriano de Mosquera, despues de que este habia roto sus relaciones con el congreso y se habia proclamado dictador . El quinto: lo dio el 10 de septiembre de 1885, Rafael Nunez cuando siendo presidente de Colombia, salio a un balcon del Palacio de San Carlos y dijo ante una manifestacion publica que habia ido a congratularlo por los exitos obtenidos en la guerra: La constitucion de 1863 ha dejado de existir . El sexto: es el celebre golpe del 31 de julio de 1900 cuando el vicepresidente Jose Manuel Marroquin se posesiono de la presidencia y ordeno poner preso al anciano presidente titular Manuel Antonio Sanclemente, quien vivia en la poblacion de Villeta. Fue este un golpe incruento, urdido y preparado en los pasillos del palacio, sobre el cual se ha escrito mucha literatura . El septimo: (13 de diciembre de 1904) lo dio el general Rafael Reyes quien en su calidad de presidente de la republica puso de lado la constitucion y las leyes para gobernar por decretos que hacian mas facil su accion como mandatario. El octavo: (13 de Junio de 1953) fue dado por el general Gustavo Rojas Pinilla contra Laureano Gomez

Antonio Alvarez Restrepo nacio en Sonson, Antioquia, Colombia, el 4 de enero de 1906. Fue concejal de Manizales en 1930, diputado a la Asamblea de Caldas en 1931 y representante a la Camara en 1934, 1945 y 1960. Desempeno los cargos de Ministro de Educacion en 1950, de Hacienda en 1951, 1952 y 1958, de Fomento de 1966 a 1969, fue consul de Colombia en Nueva York en 1947, embajador en Italia de 1968 a 1971, embajador en Rumania en 1969 y embajador ante las Naciones Unidas en 1958 y 1960. Fue profesor durante mas de treinta anos de diversos temas economicos como economia general, economia colombiana, politica fiscal y desarrollillo economico en la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, en el Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Senora del Rosario, en el Centro de Estudios Superiores de Administracion (CESA), y en la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana.
