Ella se refería a una nueva obra escrita por Ramiro. Aurelia prosiguió hablando, eclipsando un poco su fulgor irascible. -¿Quieres enterarte de lo que dice? Escucha lo que afirma en este párrafo: "La cobardía es el único lazo que une al hombre con los dioses". ¿Es que acaso tú no eres consciente de las blasfemias de tu hermano? Aurelia había admitido en su abismo tenebroso la veracidad de aquella expresión; ella reconocía esta cobardía en su madre, quien, influenciada por un perverso sacerdote, le había donado su virginidad, temerosa de suscitar en su dios apócrifo sus furias fabulosas. Este ser ya no era un hombre razonable; él era tan sólo un ilota tiranizado por su fatídica dependencia. Toda inmolación del adorador excita la altivez del ídolo. Aurelia lucía altanera y majestuosa. Su lacayo lloraba desconsoladamente. Esta debilidad imprimía en ella un sello de imperioso dominio. Mientras los sollozos arrebataban a su esposo, las súplicas emanaban de sus labios.
