About the Book

La figura de Domingo Belgrano Pérez, fundador de la familia Belgrano en el Río de la Plata y padre de Manuel Belgrano, es sumamente atractiva, aunque poco conocida. El propio Manuel ofrece solo una mención muy escueta en su autobiografía de 197 párrafos: "La ocupación de mi padre fue la de comerciante, y como le tocó el tiempo del monopolio, adquirió riquezas para vivir cómodamente y dar a sus hijos la educación mejor de aquella época".
A pesar de que Manuel resta mérito a su padre, Domingo forjó su riqueza a base de esfuerzo, trabajo e inteligencia, con una gran habilidad para los negocios. Se trató de un digno exponente del poder en el marco de la sociedad porteña de la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. Una figura encumbrada y eminente, paradigmática, con gran peso propio en la historia social de su época.
Esta obra ofrece por primera vez una investigación biográfica e histórica exhaustiva, que documenta cada hallazgo, proporcionando documentación inédita. Guillermo Pesaresi indagó en el Archivo General de Indias (Sevilla), en centenares de expedientes judiciales y administrativos del Archivo General de la Nación (Buenos Aires), junto con la profusa correspondencia personal y privada que allí se encuentra, y otras en Archivos de Bolivia y Paraguay. Por ello, sobre lo ya conocido a través de los libros de Gelman (1996), Bravo Tedín (2003) o el compendio bibliográfico de Pigna (2016), el autor ofrece una historia tan completa y documentada que se convertirá en una herramienta imprescindible para quien intente investigar la vida comercial de Buenos Aires en los últimos 40 años del siglo XVIII.
Una mención aparte merece el estudio sobre la juventud de Manuel Belgrano en Europa, entre 1786 y 1794, en el que se conoce lo que provocó en él la desgracia sobre la vida y patrimonio de su padre en 1788, su formación empírica y cultural producto de sus lecturas autodidactas e informales; y las no pocas oscuridades en la trayectoria temprana del prócer (documentos falsos u ostentación de títulos que no poseyó).

Guillermo Mario Pesaresi es Abogado por la Universidad de Buenos Aires y Doctor en Ciencias Jurídicas y Sociales Universidad del Museo Social Argentino. Secretario en la Justicia Nacional en lo Comercial de la República Argentina y postulante a la magistratura en dicho Fuero. Profesor regular adjunto y profesor de posgrado (UBA).
Disertante en numerosos congresos y jornadas, es autor de catorce libros sobre temas jurídicos y de historia del derecho, algunos de ellos citados por los tribunales de Argentina, como Honorarios en la justicia nacional y federal (Cathedra Jurídica); Ley de concursos y quiebras anotada con jurisprudencia (Abeledo-Perrot) o Régimen de honorarios para abogados y procuradores (Astrea). En su obra se destaca el libro Justicia comercial y derecho concursal. Estudio histórico y jurídico (Cathedra Jurídica), en el que desarrolla la historia del fuero mercantil y de las quiebras, desde sus orígenes hasta la actualidad.
