Leónidas Andreiev, uno de los más grandes maestros de la literatura rusa moderna, acaba de morir a la edad de cuarenta y siete años. Nacido en el centro de Rusia, en Orel, de una familia pobre, estaba predestinado a una vida llena de miserias y de privaciones. Pero su energía y su voluntad de hierro le han permitido subir a las más altas cimas de la vida intelectual rusa. Después de hacer sus estudios en el colegio, sin un céntimo en el bolsillo, sin poder esperar ninguna ayuda material, partió para Petrogrado e ingresó en la Facultad de Derecho. Cuenta en su autobiografía que durante los años de sus estudios universitarios vivía en la más negra miseria y a veces estaba sin comer dos días seguidos. En 1894, cansado de luchar, desesperado, intentó suicidarse y se tiró un balazo en el pecho. Pero los médicos salvaron la vida de quien algunos años más tarde debía ser gloria de la literatura rusa. Sus primeras novelas, El silencio, Había una vez y otras, le dieron a conocer inmediatamente. El mismo Tolstoi saludó la aparición de esta estrella ascendente. El joven escritor tuvo un feliz principio. La crítica le consagró elogiosos estudios: los editores solicitaban su colaboración. Sus posteriores novelas pusiéronle al lado de otros dos grandes novelistas rusos: Gorky y Chejov. Cada una de sus nuevas obras, citaremos, entre otras, Los siete ahorcados, Judas Iscariote, La risa roja, El gobernador, Sachka Yegulev, Los espectros, fueron un acontecimiento literario. Actualmente es Andreiev el autor que más se lee en Rusia. Sus novelas, así como sus obras de teatro, tienen un éxito incomparable. Sus manuscritos son pagados a razón de docenas de miles de rublos. La mayor parte de sus obras están traducidas a todas las lenguas europeas. En España, Andreiev empieza a ser conocido gracias a las recientes traducciones de sus obras Sachka Yegulev, Los siete ahorcados, etc...
