La rendición de Jerónimo en 1886 no marcó el final del largo conflicto con los apaches. Existe hasta hoy un caudal de experiencia personal y de historia oral en Sonora y Chihuahua que da testimonio de la indeleble impresión que este pueblo dejó a la posteridad. A través de las décadas que siguieron, hubo amplia evidencia de la existencia de numerosas bandas de apaches "salvajes" en las montañas de la Sierra Madre de Sonora y Chihuahua. A poco de entrar el siglo siguiente se produjeron numerosos reportes de encuentros fortuitos con apaches, de niños capturados y de derramamiento de sangre, los cuales resaltaron la violencia creciente en las remotas montañas, culminando ésta en un asesinato y secuestro sensacionales en 1927. ¿Quiénes fueron estos elusivos apaches? En 1930 un joven antropólogo norteamericano, Grenville Goodwin, partiendo de Arizona, se dirigió al sur con el propósito de averiguarlo. Dominando el español y el apache, Goodwin pasó tiempo viviendo entre las gentes de las poblaciones del Valle Bavispe de Sonora: Colonia Morelos, Colonia Oaxaca, Bavispe y Bacerac. Conversó con los paisanos que fueron testigos visuales de las Guerras Apaches del siglo XIX y que habían tenido contacto reciente con apaches aun escondidos en la Sierra Madre, los cuales sobrevivían cazando, cosechando, robando ganado a los mexicanos y, ocasionalmente, practicando el contrabando. Goodwin nunca encontró a los apaches pero documentó la riquísima historia oral de los paisanos. Aún más importantes fueron sus exploraciones de los campamentos recientemente abandonados. Guiado por hombres de la Sierra Madre que habían descubierto dichos campamentos secretos cuando aún estaban ocupados, Goodwin tomó inventario exhaustivo de los sitios, trazó mapas de los mismos y los fotografió - primera y única vez que los campamentos habían sido tan cuidadosamente descritos. Aunque estos campamentos secretos se abandonaban tan pronto como eran descubiertos, a fines de la década de 1920 los apaches ya habían edificado nuevos campamentos escondidos, y desde allí probablemente observaban a Goodwin y a sus compañeros. De haber estado solo, hubiera estado en peligro. Los diarios de Grenville Goodwin, que documentan su tamaña pesquisa, han sido editados y anotados por su hijo Neil, nacido tres meses antes de la trágica muerte de su padre en 1940. Neil Good win hace uso de los diarios para dialogar con el padre que nunca conoció.
