About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

The Hunters / Los cazadores, Salter's first novel, is a marvelous preview of the author's literary ambition.

Famous for his refined prose, precise words, and his insightful silences that reach high levels of genius, James Salter is undoubtedly one of the great North American writers. A military man by profession, he left the army early on to pursue his literary career which he began with The Hunters / Los cazadores in 1956; a novel that covers his experiences during the three years as a fighter pilot in the Korean War, and also includes some of the most outstanding texts ever written about the experience of flying.

Upon his arrival at the Kimpo Air Base, Captain Cleve Connell makes a firm promise to himself to become part of the elite group of fighter pilots who have shot down more than five Korean fighters. However, in parallel to the fierce air battles, an overlapping conflict grows on the ground between the airmen themselves, and Connell's successive failures contrast with the successes of his colleagues, and call into question his skill and courage. Until one day, suspended in the vastness of the cosmos on the Yalu River and aware of his insignificance, Connell finally understands that victory is only achieved by those who are able to identify their enemy and defeat them, whatever side they're on. Even if that rival is yourself.
