Los Casos de Chevalier Auguste Dupin es una obra recopilatoria que reúne los relatos del famoso personaje creado por la pluma de Edgar Allan Poe, conocido internacionalmente por C. Auguste Dupin. La obra consta de tres relatos, "Los Asesinatos de la Rue Morgue", "El Misterio de Marie Rôget" y "La Carta Hurtada"; pero además se incluye el famoso cuento "El Bicho de Oro", incluido aquí por sus características narrativas. Centrándonos nuevamente en C. Auguste Dupin, a través de este personaje, Poe se convirtió en progenitor de la base de la futura novela "noir", policiaca y detectivesca, influyendo en escritores tan famosos como Arthur Conan Doyle, quien crearía el que es el personaje más famoso internacionalmente dentro del mundo de la criminología y la resolución de misterios: Sherlock Holmes. Este personaje está basado enormemente en las capacidades analíticas y el intelecto que despliega C. Auguste Dupin, además de su naturaleza solitaria, noble y caballeresca.

Sinopsis de las diferentes obras.

Los Asesinatos de la Rue Morgue. Un terrible asesinato ha sido cometido en la Rue Morgue, una pequeña calleja de París, dejando perpleja a la policía parisina por la falta de pistas. C. Auguste Dupin, movido por ciertos intereses personales hacia un viejo conocido, investiga por su cuenta el caso, con permiso de la policía, para intentar esclarecer el caso.

El Misterio de Marie Rôget. Un nuevo asesinato tiene en vilo a la ciudad de París, y la policía se ve sobrepasada de nuevo por la falta de evidencias. Dupin, ayudado por su fiel amigo norteamericano, investiga todas las fuentes y declaraciones, para sacar a la luz la verdad sobre un caso en apariencia irresoluble. Este caso está basado en diversos hechos reales que ocurrieron en Nueva York, en tiempos de Poe, donde fue asesinada una señorita llamada Mary Cecilia Rogers.

La Carta Hurtada. Un personaje de la Corte francesa del que no se da identidad, solicita la ayuda del Prefecto de Policía, Monsieur G--, tras serle hurtada una carta que pondría en tela de juicio su honor y que traería graves consecuencias políticas de conocerse su contenido. Tras solicitar una audiencia con Dupin, Monsieur G-- declara todo lo que ha estado en su mano por intentar recuperar el documento, intentando sonsacarle alguna idea que le guie a encontrar la carta. La historia al final revelará que los más simples detalles podrían escapar del observador más minucioso.

El Bicho de Oro. William Legrand es un joven caballero que ha caído en desgracia tras varios reveses que llevaron su familia a la ruina. Retirado en la Isla de Sullivan, cerca de Charleston, vive en la tranquilidad de la naturaleza llevando una vida sencilla. Siempre acompañado de su perro terranova y su sirviente manumitido Jupiter, un día encontrará un espécimen muy particular de escarabajo, que le servirá como brújula para hallar nuevamente, junto a su amigo (que nos sirve de narrador), a la dama de la Fortuna.
