In diebus illis (Octubre de 1841) había en Madrid dos niñas muy monas, tiernas, vivarachas, amables y amadas, huérfanas de padre, de madre poco menos, porque ésta andaba como proscripta en tierras de extranjis, con marido nuevo y nueva prole, y aunque se desvivía por volver, empleando en ello las sutilezas de su despejado entendimiento, no acertaba con las llaves de la puerta de España. Vivía la parejita graciosa en una casa tan grande, que era como un mediano pueblo: no se podía ir de un extremo a otro de ella sin cansarse; y dar la vuelta grande, recorriendo salas por los cuatro costados del edificio, era una viajata en toda regia. Subiendo de los profundos sótanos a los altos desvanes, se podían admirar regiones y costumbres diferentes en capas sobrepuestas, distintos estados de sociedad que encajaban unos sobre otros como las bandejas de un baúl mundo. En la bandeja central, prisioneras en estuches, vivían las dos perlas, apenas visibles en la inmensidad de su albergue.La magnitud de éste daba a las niñas idea vaga de la grandeza de su familia, que era, como puede suponerse, de las más linajudas, y así lo pensaban, pues si en el albor de sus inteligencias creían que todas las casas del pueblo eran como la suya, no tardaron en comprender que la de ellas era, con gran diferencia, mucho mayor que todas, y más bonita por dentro y por fuera. A falta de padres, rodeábalas muchedumbre de personajes vistosos, de damas bien emperifolladas, de hombres muy graves con toda la ropa bordada de oro, y no se podían contar las tropas lindísimas que fuera y dentro de la mole palatina se congregaban día y noche para custodiar a las nenas, por donde venían éstas en conocimiento del valor y mérito de sus personitas, y adquirían el sentido de la realeza. Los primeros destellos de la razón llevaron a sus entendimientos la idea de que en derredor suyo existía mucha, mucha gente que las amaba. Y por ellas se trabó años atrás una espantosa guerra: ¡como que había también regular porción de gente que no las quería nada! Su natural viveza y la intensidad de vida histórica que las rodeaba fueron parte a que se despabilaran pronto; todo lo entendían, y apoderada de sus cerebros la idea de Nación, participaron de las tristezas y alegrías de ésta. Con las primeras oraciones aprendieron los himnos que en loor de ellas cantaban los pueblos. Me parece -dijo la hermanita menor a la mayor, después de oír cantata o recitación de poesías-, que eso de soles de inocencia lo dicen por nosotras. Y la mayor: Claro que con nosotras va todo eso. Lo de augustos ángeles lo dicen por las dos, y lo de iris de paz por mí sola... porque a ti no te llaman iris....
