About the Book

University professor and chairman of Pathology in New York, prominent scientist and author of medical textbooks recalls his early life in Romania under the fascists and communist dictatorships followed by his academic career in the US. Harry L. Ioachim shares insight to World War II and the world of medicine and pathology in his memoir, "Looking Back: From the Times of the Nazis and the Soviets to the World of Today" NEW YORK -In the course of his life, 85 year-old Harry L. Ioachim has seen many changes in society, his profession and the general way of life. From his beginnings in Romania to life in New York, Ioachim takes readers on a journey through important moments in his life and in history. He believes that "Looking Back:: From the Times of the Nazis and the Soviets to the World of Today" (ISBN 1461018145) will appeal to medical doctors, particularly pathologists, to Jewish audiences and to the general public interested in the historical events of the past century. Ioachim takes readers to Bucharest where he grew up in the pre-war years followed by the fascist dictatorship allied with Nazi Germany in the invasion of Russia and by the Soviet occupation that imposed the establishment of the Communist State. During those years he graduated from medical school, specialized in Pathology and became assistant professor at the University of Bucharest. In time he realized that the communist regime was a cruel dictatorship based on a doctrine of falsehoods and on the feared Securitate. In 1961 he managed to leave Romania wit his wife and one-year daughter and after a time in Paris to immigrate to the US. In New York, Dr.Ioachim advanced to the position of professor of pathology at the universities of Columbia, Cornell and New York University and to chairman of Pathology at Lenox Hill Hospital. He published numerous scientific papers on Cancer Immunology, Lymphomas and AIDS, authored internationally-known textbooks of Pathology, was mentor to generations of residents in training and a frequent speaker at national and international meetings.
