Elle s'engage dans le premier contingent canadien le 24 août 1914. Elle est accompagnée d'une centaine d'autres femmes qui formeront alors le Corps médical canadien. Leur périple commence à Valcartier proche de Québec où plus de 30 000 soldats sont rassemblés pour suivre un entrainement militaire intensif et ensuite partir au front sur le sol français. L'enthousiasme de ses femmes à servir leur pays, l'opportunité de découvrir de nouveaux horizons, la recherche d'aventure, le désir d'obtenir un salaire sont autant de raisons qui motiveront chacune d'entre elles. À la fin du 19ème siècle, une poignée d'infirmières avaient démontré aux autorités militaires la nécessité de leur travail auprès des soldats pendant une période de conflit. Leur dévouement, leur sérieux, leur ténacité, leur courage, leur endurance malgré la dureté de la vie en déplacement leur avaient acquis le respect de ces militaires entrainés à la dureté de la vie en milieu de guerre.Les femmes qui ont relaté leur expérience de vie dans le milieu médical durant la grande guerre ont été profondément humaines. Leur professionnalisme leur a permis de faire face à toutes les épreuves qu'elles ont pu rencontrées en offrant des soins appropriés et du réconfort aux blessés. Elles sont allées au-delà de leur rôle par leurs implications sociales. Elles ont aussi vécu des moments de détente et d'évasion en profitant des permissions qui leur étaient offertes pour rencontrer bien des gens extérieurs au camp, elles ont aussi voyagé à travers les régions dans lesquelles elles étaient affectées.Annabelle Videau est un personnage fictif qui permet d'entrevoir à travers elle ce qu'on pu vivre ces femmes engagées.Ce premier volume couvre l'histoire de celles qui ont traversé l'océan atlantique pour rejoindre les plaines de Salisbury en Angleterre jusqu'avant le départ pour la France.
