Die Vorbemerkung eines kürzlich veröffentlichten Zeitungsartikels betont die anhaltend hohe Relevanz der Lohngerechtigkeitsthematik. Nachdem die Diskussion um Gerechtigkeit unter ethischen und auch ökonomischen Gesichtspunkten lange Zeit vor dem Hintergrund einer unvereinbaren Meinungsvielfalt stillstand, mehren sich seit einiger Zeit wieder Beiträge in den Medien und unter Fachleuten zu der Thematik. Die hohe Lohnspreizung in den letzten zehn Jahren, Sozialreformen, Nullrunden und Lohnverzicht, hohe Arbeitslosigkeit und Verlagerungen von Arbeitsplätzen ins Ausland, außerordentlich hohe Zusatzeinkommen von Führungskräften, Intransparenz in den Entlohnungssystemen und ein steigendes Bedürfnis nach sozialem Ausgleich und Gerechtigkeit sind sowohl Ursache als auch Gegenstand der öffentlichen Auseinandersetzungen. Als Problem der Bestimmung eines "angemessenen Lebensunterhalts" kam das Thema der Lohngerechtigkeit erstmals im Mittelalter auf. Im Laufe der Industrialisierung wurde die gerechte Verteilung von Mitteln als soziales Problem betrachtet. Heute steht vor allem die Relation der Vergütung im Vergleich zu anderen Arbeitnehmern im Zentrum des Interesses und führt insofern zu verstärkter Sensibilität in Bezug auf eine angemessene und gerechte Entlohnung. Insbesondere die Vergütung von Führungskräften befindet sich im Blickfeld scharfer Kritik.
