SINDÉRESIS En todo evento histórico los antecedentes deben de ser estudiados con rigor. Ello se debe a que al mirar cualquiera pedazo de la Historia, la impronta del hombre modela y rige el curso de los acontecimientos como en ningún otro quehacer de la actividad humana. Muchos son los matices que median entre lo más conocido y lo más oscuro de cada uno. Puerto Príncipe ofrece un trozo de historia ingente en la concepción de la guerra del 95. Su extensa llanura era un corredor forzoso entre el oriente y el resto del país. Además, la sintonía de su gente, fundada en una práctica endogámica, aporta informaciones de primera mano sobre el antes y durante de la última guerra por la independencia. En consecuencia, el quehacer socio-económico, político, religioso y cultural, imprimen carácter a una especie de etnología principeña que modela la región y su gente a nivel de toda la isla. El presente estudio expone los hechos a partir de las incertidumbres más allá de las conspiraciones y recelos inquietantes del período finisecular del Príncipe. Como mucho, algo se ha agendado desde las etiquetas de zanjoneros o inmaculados sin entrar en detalles. El protagonismo de sujetos discutibles, produce cierto estremecimiento que la historiografía no trata teniendo en cuenta sus implicaciones. A diferencia del resto de la isla, la legendaria villa, nos presenta a un individuo de pensamiento tan enrevesado como los callejones de su ciudad. Ante su mirada, la incapacidad del gobierno colonial para ocuparse o resolver los problemas más perentorios (salud, alimento, educación, empleo), junto a la hostilidad del bandolerismo en el territorio, hace que hacendados y lugareños, implementen medidas extremas para sobrevivir y progresar durante el período de interguerras. En los años que sucedieron a La Grande, por ejemplo, la información geodésica manejada por las autoridades permanece intacta. Nada hizo el gobierno colonial por mejorar caminos, vías de comunicación o hacerse de nuevos planos topográficos. Sin embargo, a pesar de ese impasse, la región recupera su brío de antaño. El azúcar y el ganado, igual que otras pequeñas industrias, tienen que valerse del trabajo asalariado debido a la escasez de mano esclava. En los 90, Puerto Príncipe adquiere poder a través de un complejo financiero, industrial y ganadero que renueva el patriarcado de la comarca. El beneficio real de la economía acelera su andadura entre empréstitos bancarios y las ventajas del capital. Ya no era cuestión de colonia o independencia, sino de comercio y prosperidad, sin importar la incongruencia entre el poder económico y la ausencia de poder político. De modo que al escuchar tambores de guerra, la región entra en una espiral de demencias que conduce al auto-linchamiento político de varios patricios. Nada contiene las conspiraciones de quienes llegan a urdir las intrigas más bajas del período finisecular cubano. Verbigracia, el tema del negro es sobredimensionado ante el temor de una guerra racial, la delación del alijo de armas del 94, el bandolerismo dentro y fuera de la causa separatista y la campaña de la prensa autonomista. Martí -que nunca visitó Camagüey-, tuvo que lidiar con esa realidad. A su pensamiento se acercó gente honesta, jóvenes y mujeres, pero también una comparsa de patriófobos y racistas a quienes seducía el tema de la independencia mientras fuera desde la tribuna o no mediara algún evento que desestabilizara su prosperidad económica. Ahí está el tono de su epistolario que cambia, desde 1894, respecto a la actitud de los patricios camagüeyanos y el tema de la guerra. Nada logra el Apóstol tras los varios comisionados enviados al Príncipe sino el desprecio hacia lo que llamaron entonces la guerra de Martí.
