Este es un libro que parte de la música, de la relación que existe entre una memorable canción de Bob Dylan y una balada narrativa que, nacida quizás en la Italia del siglo XVII, se ha extendido por todo el mundo a partir de su traslación al inglés en el siglo XVIII. Pero, más allá de la música, este es un libro sobre el significado de la Historia y el devenir de los tiempos. En "A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall", Dylan recupera los elementos compositivos de la balada para ganar en espesor y profundidad el acontecer, casi apocalíptico, del siglo XX. Esta canción, como en su versión original, es un testamento; pero sin destinatarios y, probablemente, sin horizonte de futuro. Un enunciado rítmico que advierte la catástrofe, el sin sentido y la incertidumbre de los nuevos tiempos, incluyendo el presente, agobiado y ensimismado en la pandemia.Tal vez, su única ilusión promisoria -cocluye Alessandro Portelli- se encuentre en los ausentes de las historias oficiales, en los marginados de los relatos, en los impertinentes deslegitimados; en aquellos que inventan tradiciones que se repiten, convierten, desentonan; los que reverberan por los siglos sin intenciones de desfallecer o dejarse arrasar por la corriente de una fuerte lluvia.

Alessandro Portelli fue profesor de literatura Angloamericana en la Universidad de Roma La Sapienza y es uno los principales especialistas internacionales en la Historia Oral. En 1972 fundó el Circolo Gianni Bosio, un colectivo activista dedicado a estudiar el folclore, la historia oral y la cultura de las personas, en el que sigue trabajando incasablemente. Sus obras fueron traducidas a diversas lenguas y ocupan un lugar de referencia ineludible en los debates actuales, tanto en el campo de las Humanidades y las Ciencias Sociales, como en el de la política. Entre ellas se destacan: La orden ya fue ejecutada. Roma, las Fosas Ardeatinas, la memoria (2004), They Say in Harlan County: An Oral History (2010), Badlands.
