Oeuvre du néoplatonicien Jamblique, né dans la seconde moitié du 3e siècle après J.-C. et décédé en 325. L'ouvrage, qui se divise en 10 livres, est une réponse à la Lettre de Porphyre à Anéblon. Dans cette lettre, Porphyre attaquait la théurgie et spécialement les formes de divination pratiquées par les ministres de l'art nouveau. La réponse prend la défense de la théurgie. Jamblique est, au début du IVe siècle de notre ère, le troisième maître de l'école néo-platonicienne, après Plotin et Porphyre. Il en recueille la succession au moment où l'école est aux prises avec un problème grave. Devant la montée du christianisme, un disciple de Pythagore et de Platon peut-il rester indifférent et laisser périr les traditions religieuses de l'Antiquité, qui semblent faire partie de l'héritage culturel hellénique ? Par ailleurs, n'est-il pas urgent de revigorer cet héritage lui-même en puisant aux sources orientales dont il est issu ? C'est, en effet, une opinion fréquente chez les philosophes de cette époque que la plus haute sagesse métaphysique et religieuse vient d'Égypte où Pythagore et Platon eux-mêmes sont allés chercher leur meilleure inspiration. Mais cette sagesse ne se présente pas sous une forme exclusivement spéculative. Elle se cristallise dans un ensemble touffu de pratiques minutieuses qu'on désigne sous le nom de théurgie . Il faut entendre par là une sorte de sacramentalisme qui parfois dégénère en magie. Les rites théurgiques sont des signes sensibles auxquels les puissances divines auraient conféré un pouvoir bénéfique. Alors que Plotin s'était tenu délibérément à l'écart de cette liturgie, que son disciple Porphyre avait oscillé de l'adhésion à la critique, Jamblique s'engage résolument dans la défense de la théurgie. Il va tenter de justifier, et en même temps d'épurer, le paganisme menacé en lui fournissant une base spéculative.
