L'Atlantide est peut-être aussi le plus grand mystère de l'histoire. L'Atlantide est une île mythique, de la taille d'un continent, qui aurait été attribuée au dieu de la mer Poséidon lors du partage du monde, et qui aurait disparu brutalement lors d'un cataclysme. Son histoire offre "un cas d'école" très intéressant: avant Platon (env. 427-347 avant J.-C.), aucune trace écrite de cette île-continent engloutie par l'Océan déchaîné; après lui, toutes les sources sont tributaires de son récit. Il semble donc légitime d'affirmer que l'illustre philosophe est bien l'inventeur de ce qui porte aujourd'hui l'étiquette de "mythe" (au même titre que d'autres fictions platoniciennes, comme le mythe d'Er à la fin de La République, par exemple). Platon est donc le premier à évoquer vers 350 avant Jésus-Christ dans deux dialogues, Timée et Critias, une grande île disparue en un jour et une nuit, engloutie sous les flots de l'Atlantique. Le récit de Platon a toutes les qualités d'un bon roman de science-fiction. même si certains cherchent encore à lui conférer une réalité historiquement attestée. Avec le style fin et brillant qui le caractérise, Michel Manzi nous narre l'histoire des différentes hypothèses de travail qui ont jusqu'ici prévalu sur l'Atlantide, explore l'étrange parenté entre l'alphabet maya et l'alphabet phénicien, et revient sur les traces historiques laissées par les cataclysmes naturels pouvant expliquer cette énigme. Un ouvrage passionnant qui s'appuie sur les connaissances du célèbre continent disparu dont disposent alors la science et l'intelligentsia internationale à laquelle appartient Manzi peu avant
