About the Book

Following a break of one year, the full season review returns. The LFC File has put together the season's blog entries to bring you the fifth book in the, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly series.

Follow the weekly summaries and relive the last action-packed season at one of the world's most renowned and successful football clubs. Following the rebuild of the team's most successful midfields in recent memory, the recruitment team got together to bring in four players that they identified as a perfect mix of ability, potential and of course being the modern day Liverpool F.C., value to replace the departing and ageing talent.

Dominik Szoboszlai (RB Leipzig), Alexis Mac Allister (Brighton & Hove Albion), Ryan Gravenberch (Bayern Munich) and Wataru Endo (VfB Stuttgart) were drafted in at a total reported cost of some 172.0 million. In addition, Connor Bradley, Jarell Quansah, and Ben Doak were granted promotions from the Academy and youth teams in order to bolster and compliment the new arrivals.

It is definitely fair to say, most teams - Liverpool included, in the midst of such a crucial and substantial overhaul would have adjusted the season's expectations accordingly. Perhaps a top-four finish would be regarded as a success. Perhaps some silverware from one of the four competitions the team would compete in over the coming season.

What the team achieved however, was in reality above expectations. Come March 2024, the team was top of the English Premier League, League Cup winners, in the quarter final of the F.A. Cup and in the latter stages of the Europe League competition and being good value for it. All this was against the bone-jarring news that Jürgen Klopp had decided to step down from his position as manager at the end of the season.

As one would expect, expectations grew. Everyone, included myself, forgot all about 'Liverpool 2.0' as boss Klopp described his rebuilt team. Now there was talk of a 'Quadruple'. Forget about 'Doubles' and 'Trebles'. That's the stuff of mortals. We were dreaming big...Believers...

Then as the days and weeks rolled on, the reality began to set in. There's nothing wrong with believing. We as Liverpool fans faced the reality of reality. We were supporting a fledgling of a team. A team that for all its talent and potential, has only just flown the nest. The guile and killer instinct of a mature, well honed predator wasn't quite there.

A disappointing defeat to Manchester United in the F.A. Cup woke us from our Quadruple-dreaming slumber. Less than a month later, a cruel home defeat against eventual Europa League winners Atlanta knocked the stuffing out of the side. Disappointing league results including a draw against Manchester United and a home defeat to Crystal Palace finally put paid to our dreams.

The more mature teams of Manchester City and Arsenal put strong runs together to finish the season ahead of Klopp's side. That finale demonstrated one thing. The belief of the fans, players, the boss and staff carried the team further than any of us expected.
