La littérature antique nous a laissé un témoignage conséquent sur notre passé, sur la manière dont vivaient et pensaient nos ancêtres. Nous possédons des traités d'astrologie, de médecine, de danse, de chasse, de domestication d'animaux, d'agriculture, mais aussi des chroniques, des contes, des fables, et surtout un nombre incroyable de traités d'alliances, de codes et de contrats commerciaux. Cependant, en ce qui concerne la littérature théologique ou simplement les prières et des rituels religieux, nous possédons si peu.

La mystique des sociétés primordiales était revêtue d'un caractère initiatique. La transmission des mythes et formules de rituels se faisait donc de manière orale, à l'intérieur d'une même catégorie de personne et dans une même caste.

Quand ces traditions orales cessèrent d'être pratiquées, les récits mythologiques furent transformés, adaptés, voire disparurent tout à fait de la culture populaire. Il en va de même pour les prières et les formules religieuses: quand celles-ci cessèrent d'être chantées, elles s'effacèrent aussitôt des mémoires.

Ces formules, sous forme de signes et de symboles, furent de tout temps gravées sur les murs des palais, au sommet de piliers marquant les frontières entre royaumes, mais lorsque ces États tombèrent, leurs inscriptions disparurent aussi. C'est ainsi que l'alphabet runique des anciens Scandinaves nous est aujourd'hui quasiment indéchiffrable.

Les très riches civilisations égyptiennes et mésopotamiennes possèdent des vestiges architecturaux si nombreux qu'ils nous livrent des centaines de prières et d'incantations, car la plupart sont gravées sur des tablettes d'argiles ou sur les façades des temples. Mais en ce qui concerne les civilisations indo-européennes, le corpus théologique est beaucoup plus mince, voir quasiment inexistant.

Par ailleurs, nombreuses furent les catastrophes qui décimèrent la science des Anciens . Parmi les exemples les plus évocateurs, citons la destruction par Alexandre d'Aryana, la capitale aryenne, mais aussi l'incendie de la bibliothèque d'Alexandrie, le génocide des druides gaulois, les autodafés du christianisme et de l'islam (incendie des bibliothèques mazdéennes), ou encore les divers massacres d'hérétiques (avant qu'ils ne soient éradiqués, Albigeois et Bogomiles transmettaient les traditions orphiques et perso-manichéennes en Europe).

Pensons aussi aux épidémies, qui peuvent en quelques mois décimer les rangs des Anciens, et encore ajouter l'usure du temps, l'humidité, mais aussi le recyclage des parchemins par des scribes économes ou peu scrupuleux... et nous aurons dressé un tableau assez complet des raisons expliquant pourquoi la culture polythéiste européenne nous est si peu connue.

Si les mythologies gréco-romaines et scandinaves sont aujourd'hui célèbres, il demeure très difficile de véritablement connaître la religion des Gaulois, tout comme de déchiffrer la véritable initiation mithriaque. En ces domaines, les autodafés ont eu bien plus d'importance dans l'Histoire que les poètes ou les chroniqueurs. C'est ainsi que de milliers d'années de traditions mazdéennes, demeure un Avesta de 300 pages, sauvé in extremis des flammes et de la fureur islamique par un groupe d'émigrés ayant fui leur patrie pour rejoindre l'Inde.

De même, de Vélès, de Péroun, de Dagda, de Cernunnos, divinités tutélaires slaves et celtes, nous ne possédons aucun témoignage direct, si ce n'est quelques totems et quelques rares mentions dans d'obscurs contes folkloriques.

Les anciens dieux européens ont cependant traversé l'Histoire, mais à travers des oeuvres littéraires, telles que l'Iliade et l'Odyssée, et non pas grâce à des recueils de prières sacrées, comme le sont le Rig-Véda indien ou l'Avesta perse.
