About the Book

In normal times, it is difficult enough to address children to explain the nature of a phenomenon. So what about in difficult times? Children are intelligent and capable of understanding, but we have to make sure that the approach is a happy one. So how do we approach the subject of the Covid-19 pandemic with children? How do we talk to them without further dramatising things, because the damage has been done somewhere? Indeed, the coronavirus has been over-publicised and it is difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. Too much information, not only contradictory, but alarming and defeatist, was circulating, taking both adults and children hostage.

Yes, children also have the right to information. However, it must be reliable, clear, understandable, and free from rumours and misinformation. The Covid-19 pandemic is a thorny, burning, dramatic, worrying and distressing subject at the same time. Can we avoid it? No, on the contrary, we must approach it with tact, sensitivity and responsibility. I have taken the actions and information of the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a starting point for this essential and difficult series, because I appreciate the magnitude of the task. Taking on such a challenge is no easy task, as it requires psychology and pedagogy to claim this kind of writing. Being a writer with a beautiful pen is not enough when it comes to this kind of literature.

This perilous exercise has a price: an investment of effort and time. Nevertheless, it paid off: The Little Corona was born! I feel completely satisfied and hope that the children and their parents will be too. The Little Corona is a series that tells the story of the pandemic in a certain chronology. In fact, it is an answer to the questions of children and the questions of parents. To educate and to please, to explain and to satisfy, to tell and to please, these are the goals that The Little Corona has set itself in all modesty. Educational, it popularises information to make it accessible in simple, useful and true French. Even grammar has its own little lot where the concordance of tenses goes from number to number. The compound tenses have adopted the right attitude of going step by step without ever rushing, while using real data. And to round off the package, English and Spanish have been added to accustom and encourage children to use foreign words. The English and Spanish versions are the new friends of the French Little Corona, the oldest of the series.

The Little Corona focused on the family in general and the role of parents in society, emphasising work and solidarity within the community. Grandparents, parents, neighbours, friends and other citizens are used to explain the benefits of intra-family and inter-community relationships. The relationships between nations and countries are also discussed, but not in great detail. This parsimony is just to explain the other side of the pandemic. Moreover, I tried to put into perspective this coronavirus that is scaring people by ravaging the whole world according to some media. Yes, it is a disease that makes people talk, but it does not do as much damage as other plagues and diseases such as war, famine, road accidents and seasonal flu.

Indeed, the coronavirus is contagious. Invisible to the naked eye, like other known viruses, it is causing the whole world to tremble. Nevertheless, it is not the end of the world and the Earth continues to turn, distilling life with its eternal beauty. It's just a disease that you can protect yourself from and also catch and, more importantly, escape from.
