Selbstverständlich erscheint ihm ebenso die Vielfalt der Bücher, die er in Bibliotheken ausleihen, in Antiquariaten günstig gebraucht erwerben oder online sogar in elektronischer Form herunterladen kann. Genauso natürlich nutzt er verschiedene Medien, um Neuerscheinungen und Katalogtitel zu bibliographieren. Buchhandel und -produktion sind in Deutschland allgegenwärtig, und das Buch ist auch in Haushalten ohne literarische Interessen ein ständiger Begleiter - beispielsweise in Form des Koch- oder Schulbuchs. In jeder städtischen Einkaufszone gehören große Buchhandelsketten zum Erscheinungsbild, und die Verlage rücken ihre Erzeugnisse auf den großen Messen in Frankfurt und Leipzig durch geschickte Publicitymaßnahmen in den Fokus der Öffentlichkeit. Auch wenn heute vielfach über den Rückgang der Lesebegeisterung geklagt und das Internet zunehmend als Informationsquelle genutzt wird - das Buch und seine Vermarktung haben ihren festen Platz in unserem Alltag. Die Geschichte des gedruckten Buches ist inzwischen rund 550 Jahre alt. Die heutige Vermarktungsstruktur und der aktuelle Stand einer Medien- und Informationsgesellschaft bedingen und fördern einander. Doch diesen Status besaß Deutschland im ausgehenden Mittelalter noch längst nicht.
