Die Arbeit untersucht Prinzip und Geschichte des Phänomens literarischer Authentizität mit dem Ziel, ein literaturwissenschaftliches Propädeutikum zu liefern, das eine rasche Verständigung über dieses Phänomen ermöglicht.

In der Problematisierung des aktuellen philosophischen, medientheoretischen und literaturwissenschaftlichen Diskurses wird in Kapitel I ('Authentisches') der höchst diffuse Assoziationsradius von Authentizität im Sinne einer Stilqualität und einer anthropologischen Konstante operationalisiert. Die beobachtete Eigenschaft von Authentizät als 'Effekt der Darstellung' macht diese als primär rezeptionsästhetisch einzuholendes Phänomen sinnfällig. Der Ausgangspunkt rezeptionsästhetischer Gegenwärtigkeit kommt nicht nur in der Analyse historisch wirksamer Texte zur Geltung, sondern darüber hinaus in der archäologischen Methode diachroner Retrospektive beim Durchgang durch die topologische Ordnung der kulturkritischen Inanspruchnahme der Authentizitätsutopie.

Über 'Weibliches', i.e. die kritische Sichtung des Wolfschen Oeuvres und der im Konzept 'subjektiver Authentizität' favorisierten Romantikerinnen (v. Arnim, v. Günderrode, Mereau) in Kapitel II dringt die Arbeit zum 'Romantischen' vor (Kapitel III), das über einen erweiterten Epochenbegriff von ca. 1770 bis 1848 angesiedelt wird. Die weitläufige Genealogie des Authentizitätsbedürfnisses, das sich an der Schwelle zur Moderne vehement artikuliert, wird unter Einbezug des prä- und postromantischen Sentimentalismus ins Auge gefaßt und entsprechend der im Sinne ultimativer Individualität identifizierten Logik und Dynamik des Authentizitätseffekts analysiert: die frühaufklärerische Hof- und romantische Philisterkritik, das empfindsame Konzept der eloquentia cordis, Winckelmanns Glorifizierung des 'Edel-Einfältigen', Herders Philosophie des 'Haptischen', Mereaus, Grimms, Moritz' und Goethes Visionen von Kindlichkeit und Jugendlichkeit, Foucaults 'Parrhesia' und schließlich Sulzers und Schillers geschichtsphilosophische Temporalisierungen von Authentizität.
