Figure de proue du symbolisme belge, Maurice Maeterlinck reste aujourd'hui célèbre pour son mélodrame Pelléas et Mélisande (1892), sommet du théâtre symboliste mis en musique par Debussy en 1902, pour sa pièce pour enfants L'Oiseau bleu (1908), et pour son essai inspiré par la biologie La Vie des abeilles (1901), oeuvre au centre du cycle d'essais La Vie de la nature, composé également de L'Intelligence des fleurs (1910), La Vie des termites (1926), La Vie de l'espace (1928) et La Vie des fourmis (1930). Moins connu que La Vie des abeilles (1901), la publication de L'Intelligence des fleurs (1910) jouera pour Maeterlinck un rôle prépondérant dans l'obtention du Prix Nobel de littérature l'année suivante, en 1911. Extrait: "Voici deux pauvres plantes rampantes que vous avez mille fois rencontrées dans vos promenades, car on les trouve en tous lieux et jusque dans les coins les plus ingrats où s'est égarée une pincée d'humus. Ce sont deux variétés de Luzernes (Medicago ) sauvages, deux mauvaises herbes au sens le plus modeste de ce mot. L'une porte une fleur rougeâtre, l'autre une houppette jaune de la grosseur d'un pois. À les voir se glisser et se dissimuler dans le gazon, parmi les orgueilleuses graminées, on ne se douterait jamais qu'elles ont, bien avant l'illustre géomètre et physicien de Syracuse, découvert et tenté d'appliquer, non pas à l'élévation des liquides, mais à l'aviation, les étonnantes propriétés de la vis d'Archimède. Elles logent donc leurs graines en de légères spirales..."
About the Author: Maurice Polydore Marie Bernard Maeterlinck (1862-1949) est un écrivain belge, francophone de Flandre. Il obtient le prix Nobel de littérature en 1911. Le Prix Nobel qui échoit à Maurice Maeterlinck en 1911 a une triple signification. Il couronne tout d'abord une oeuvre quadruple, faite qu'elle est de poésie, de théâtre, d'essai et de traduction. Il consacre ensuite l'esthétique symboliste. Il constitue enfin la première légitimation d'une littérature francophone extra-hexagonale. Mais c'est surtout sa réflexion sur la construction sociale du monde naturel qui vaut à Maeterlinck sa réputation de philosophe spiritualiste: il célèbre l'unicité de l'univers dans La vie des abeilles (1901), que complèteront plus tard La vie des termites (1926) et La vie des fourmis (1930).
