Una madre ingombrante e un'esistenza vissuta da "bambino obbediente" hanno fatto di lui una persona poco combattiva. Il mistero del brigantino Durante un fine settimana trascorso nella casa al mare della zia paterna, Niki fa cadere inavvertitamente un ex voto. Trova, nascosta in un doppiofondo del quadro, una lettera autografa del comandante di un brigantino naufragato. Il capitano Costa, sopravvissuto alla tragedia, chiede perdono a Dio per aver causato la morte di alcuni membri dell'equipaggio, pur di non venir meno al solenne impegno di mantenere segreto il contenuto di una misteriosa scatola, che si trovava a bordo sotto la sua custodia. E' una folgorazione, Niki trova uno scopo. Erompono la sua innata curiosità, il suo amore per la storia e per il mare, da troppo tempo sopiti. Niki decide di fare chiarezza sui fatti menzionati nella lettera. Coinvolge nella ricerca della verità sul brigantino l'amico Lebo (un ex collega così soprannominato per le affinità con il Lebowski dei fratelli Coen) e Cris, una ragazza conosciuta a un corso di sub. In viaggio con Niki nel secolo breve Parallelamente alle vicende di Niki e dei suoi amici, con una serie di flash-back, si va indietro al periodo in cui è avvenuto il naufragio - occorso il 29 marzo 1938 - e ancora a ritroso nel tempo. Nuove figure entrano attivamente a far parte del racconto in una trama che varca i confini italiani. Personaggi come Einstein, Tesla, Marconi, Henry S. Morgan, Papa Pio XI, Fermi, Segrè, Ernestina Marangoni e Majorana rivivono in questo libro, dove gli eventi storici e gli episodi documentati si aprono agli scenari verosimili delineati dall'autore.
