About the Book

Linear estimation and design of experiments planned as a text-book for students, and not as a manual for practising statisticians, the book covers the General theory of linear estimation and its application to the analysis of data in fixed-effects models. It offers an integrated approach placing proportionate emphasis on mathematical theory, its application to standard designs, and computational techniques. What distinguishes this book from other texts on experimental designs is the use throughout of R.C. Boses approach to the theory of least squares, based on the concept of estimable functions. Among the many advantages of this approach are the following: the use of side conditions in the solution of normal equations is dispensed with, sums of squares and degrees of freedom are defined unambiguously, the distributions of sums of squares are obtained directly without appealing to cochrans theorem, hypotheses which can be tested are separated from those which cannot, the role of interactions to test for factor additivity in factorial experiments is clearly brought out. The book will be of use to Honours and postgraduate students of statistics. About the Author D. D. Joshi obtained the B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. degrees from the University of Delhi, and the Diploma du Statisticien and Docteur es Sciences degrees from the University of Paris. He has taught at the Universities of Delhi, Panjab, Paris, Leicester (U.K.), and Mustansiriyah (Iraq). He has been at the Institute of Social Sciences, Agra University as Professor of Statistics since 1961 and as Director of the Institute since 1971. After retirement from the institute of Social Sciences, he was Pro-Vice Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University and incharge of their Regional Centres in India for three years. Professor Joshi`s research interests include demography, information theory, coding theory, reliability theory, linear estimation, and statistical inference. His research papers on these topics have been published in international journals and have received good reviews. Professor Joshi attended the U.N. World Population Conference in Belgrade in 1965 as an invited contributor, and the International Conference on the Teaching of Statistics in Sheffield in 1982 as a member of the Indian national delegation. He has also visited U.S. Universities under the International Visitor Program of the U.S. Government.
