About the Book

This series of 1 books is compiled and edited by Limerick Historian, Archivist & Entrepreneur Gerard J. Hannan BA MBS. Limerick History Gazette began life in September 215 when Hannan began to gather 2, previously unpublished images of Limerick in the 2th Century. Using social media, he crowdsourced the images and built an online archive at www.limerickgazette.com where they will remain permanently archived for present and future generations of Limerick people worldwide. All of the images in the archive belong to the people of 2th Century Limerick and come from their own private home collections. These are images captured throughout the century by the people who lived their lives on the streets and lanes of Limerick and, as such, witnessed first-hand the history of their native city unfold and opted to capture it forever in photographic form. This fact makes the archive unique because what they captured was Limerick life from their perspective and their images show us their reality and what was important to them. In fact, unintentionally or otherwise, this is a pure, unbiased representation of historical fact as evidenced by the images themselves. However, it is not sufficient to just produce a book of images without trying to capture the social and economic environment in which these people lived. To achieve this Hannan has searched through local, national and international newspaper archives to ascertain what was important to the people of 2th Century Limerick. The combination of images and text in each edition of Limerick History Gazette will permit us to see and experience 2th Century Limerick in a way which, up until the current digital era, has never allowed before.

About the Author

Gerry Hannan was born in Limerick Ireland in 1959 and worked as a Journalist & Broadcaster in his native city for over 20 years. He has successfully published three non-fiction books including Ashes, Tis In Me Ass and From Bards To Blackguards. He returned to Mary Immaculate College as a Mature Student and successfully completed a Liberal Arts Degree in History & Media before completing his Masters Degree in International Entrepreneurship Management at Kemmy Business School at the University of Limerick. Hannan conceived the idea of Limerick History Gazette while studying History and has now developed his solo run project, to build a free access online digital archive of 20,000 previously unpublished images of 20th Century Limerick, into a globally embraced (primarily by the Limerick Diaspora) collaborative enterprise. A major part of this project is the publication of 100 books covering the entire 20th century. Each book not only contains 200+ Images (Totalling 20,000 across all books) but also a number of major articles on historically significant issues and events that the people of Limerick encountered in their daily lives. Each issue further includes a special news focus on each year of the 20th century where Hannan digs through local, national and international newspaper archives to find the more idiosyncratic news stories of the period. By understanding the society in which the people of Limerick lived and comprehending the issues that affected them and seeing their private images of the events in their daily lives we can better understand the world in which they lived and how it has influenced our modern world.
