About the Book

Sara Shagufta, the promising young poetess from Pakistan was taken away by the cruel hands of death in 1984 at a very young age of thirty. Poetry was her bread of life. The celebrated Bharatiya Jnanpith Award winning Poetess Amrita Pritam has restructured Sara's life story out of her many letters, memories and autobiographical writings painstakingly collected over the years. Sara got inspiration to write poetry when she was deeply hurt with the innocent death of her new born son and the callous indifference of her second husband towards the tragedy at such a critical moment of her motherhood. Ill treated by her husbands and the unmindful society, she was driven to madness and was constantly in and out of the mental asylums. She continued to write poetry with rare verve. She tried to commit suicide by taking poison several times but was saved by timely medical help. Towards the end of her life, love developed between her and Syed Ahmad but it was too late. For Sara words were power in her hands. Despite her untimely death, she has left behind a rich poetic treasure. Here in this book, sandwiched between brilliant prose pieces, her terse and earthy poetry is surprisingly close to the style of Sylvia Plath.
