About the Book

Underthe billowing Big Top of my life, am I the Ringmaster, the Clown ...or just the guy who gets fired from the cannon? This startlingly original collection of poems runs the gamut from joy to despair and all ports in between. Shudder at the bleak and futuristic "Manifesto of the Machines", described by the Magic Oxygen Literary Prize as 'thunderously chilling' and 'horribly credible' with 'a glorious steady pulse of iambic pentameter running though its beautifully structured stanzas'.Revel in the exuberance of "I Saw You Dance the Tango", a celebration of profound love and commitment, or shed a quiet tear at the personal tragedy of "Elephant in the Room", which was shortlisted for the Bridport Prize.Chuckle at the quirky humour of "25 Questions for a First Date" and the self-incrimination of "Spring Refrain." In fact, just sit back and enjoy all thirty poems in this delightful little book.As well as diversity of poetic form, from the highly structured Sestina and Rondeau Redouble to Free verse, the collection exhibits a wide variety of themes. The author stays true to his personal maxim that the best poetry should make you laugh, make you cry and make you think.
About the Author: Steve Herbert is a Kiwi. Like most of his kind, he is a laid-back fellow, fond of a joke, who enjoys nothing more than watching the all-conquering All Blacks demolish the latest pretender to Rugby's throne. On TV of course. Actually going to the game would require more effort than seems worthwhile; and money, which poets don't generally have. A teacher for most of his life, he has nurtured budding minds in rural New Zealand, in the hustle and bustle of Singapore, and in the tropical heat of Australia's Far North Queensland. Now back in his homeland, he attempts to maintain a run-down little place in the wilds of Northland - that's the pointy bit at the top of the North Island. Preventing him from writing quite as much as he would like to, are two cats, three dogs, three goats and five chickens. And the wife, of course, who seems to see some sort of virtue in having clothes on her back and food on the table. Despite this, he has writing credits which include being shortlisted for the Bridport Prize with Elephant in the Room (included in this book), and sneaking a placing in the Magic Oxygen Literary Prize. That poem is here too - Manifesto of the Machines. He has also had various poems published in both print and online magazines.
