About the Book

This is a new edition of The Life of Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, written in 1906 by Dr. Mudd's daughter Nettie Mudd. This new edition is annotated by Robert K. Summers, author of The Assassin's Doctor. It includes:

  • The complete text of the original 1906 book
  • Historic photos of the Fort Jefferson military prison
  • Letters from Dr. Mudd not in the original 1906 book
  • Dr. Mudd's statement to authorities about Booth's visit to his farm
  • President Johnson's pardon of Dr. Mudd
  • Mrs. Mudd's last interview before her death in 1911
  • Biography of Nettie Mudd, author of the original 1906 edition
  • Additional information about the life of Dr. Mudd

Dr. Mudd was one of eight persons convicted of conspiracy in the 1865 assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Four of those convicted were immediately executed. The other four, including Dr. Mudd, were sent to the Fort Jefferson military prison in the Dry Tortugas islands. These islands lie about 70 miles west of Key West Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. Havana, Cuba lies about 90 miles south of the prison.
While the book covers Dr. Mudd's entire life, readers will probably find the most fascinating part to be the letters exchanged between Dr. Mudd, his wife, relatives, and friends during his 44 months of imprisonment. Dr. Mudd received a life sentence, but was pardoned by President Andrew Johnson in 1869. The pardon was based in part on Dr. Mudd's heroic work during a yellow fever epidemic at the prison in 1867. When the epidemic had run its course, 300 surviving soldiers signed a petition to President Johnson to pardon Dr. Mudd, which he did in 1869.
After his pardon, Dr. Mudd returned home to resume the life of a physician and farmer. He passed away fourteen years later at the young age of 49.

About the Author: Robert Summers has been researching, writing, and lecturing on Dr. Samuel A. Mudd's role in the Lincoln assassination for more than a decade. He lives in the Washington, D.C. area, which is convenient to research institutions such as the U.S. National Archives and the Library of Congress, where many original source documents about the Civil War and the Lincoln assassination are available. The three books he has written on Dr. Mudd are available in paperback and Kindle versions. Robert has also published this new edition of The Life of Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, by Nettie Mudd. The original hardcopy book was published in 1906, and is now in the public domain. Robert maintains a website at samuelmudd.com which provides video and other information about Dr. Mudd that could not be included in his books.
