About the Book

"Life as an onion is a gorgeous collection of poems by Renee that I had the pleasure and honour of reading in advance of release.
The author has an unique ability to evoke strong imagery in her poems that the reader can not only see but feel deeply each and every word. It's an unique talent that I admire incredibly.
There are so many favourite poems it's hard to pick one, I fell in love with so many lines to which I related deeply with.
The collection of poems is a journey, a deep and personal one, an awakening, a home coming to oneself.

' I was becoming a raging tiger living within the empty space where erupting empathy should be.'

These lines will stay with me for a long time, they gave me courage and hope that in darkness there is light:

'Surrender to the sinking in order to ascend.
Give it up and melt into the enormity of everything.'

And the final poem is like watching a caterpillar finally becoming a butterfly, i had tears in my eyes and I was relating to these words so deeply that I felt an enormous amount of pride and admiration For the author's journey and, myself. Not to hold on to pain anymore but to love and beyond.

'One day, she didn't need every ounce of pain because she finally saw the vastness of beauty within and beyond her borders'

An incredible collection that you don't want to miss."

Barbara Gianquitto
Author of 4:04am Thoughts

"This, Novosel's debut poetry collection, is a moving tribute to the power of choice and purpose. With grace and tenacity, Novosel leads us on a quest to discover our place in the world. Asking questions of what is, what was, and what could be, she guides us through the shadows to create our own story, just as she, through her writing, creates her own.

Novosel's poetic language is sublime and full of a beautiful energy. Each piece flows in a continual movement towards that final resolution, of loving and living in its truest form. Moving beyond self doubt and surrendering to what is and what can be. The essence of possibility despite our (often self-imposed) restrictions on them.

'Life as an Onion' is a joy to read. It reflects both a love and a determination to face life's challenges head on and survive beyond the boundaries. To embrace all the different versions of ourself. To be 'entirely alive.'"

"I have a history of avoiding poetry because, frankly, I find it to be intimidating. Poetry, like all fine art forms, utilizes a variety of technical skills that are foreign to me and cause me to distrust my reactions. That said, I've decided to write this review from my heart using the cliché "I don't know art [poetry] but I know what I like" as my guide!

What I find most compelling is Renee's ability to arouse responses that encompass childlike wonder as well as profound vulnerability and psychic pain. The Blindness of Busy weaves the simplicity of nature and the daily grind, challenging us to linger and embrace life's simple pleasures. Clearly, her regard for the natural world has been a source of inspiration and healing (Superior Creatures). I am more attracted to her less abstract works, stripped of esoteric adjectives, that rip the scabs from wounds barely healed. Raw and stripped of embellishment, they deliver the most direct and visceral hit to my heart and head. (The Ending & Why I Stay)."

Diane Novosel
Social Worker

Writer, mother, philosopher, and student of experience Renée Novosel, draws from a decade of poetry to compile her debut collection Life as an Onion that unpeels life's layers of love, heartbreak, death, growth, and acceptance. In Life as an Onion, Novosel explores the sharp tears of love's sting, the dull ache of life's challenges, and the sweet rewards that arrive with patience.
