About the Book

Life of a Gandhian: Karmayogi Dadasaheb Chaudhari is a biographical-cum-political novel. It depicts a distinguished police inspector resigning from service in 1930 after a tortuous self-struggle coupled with meditation on Gandhian thinking followed by commitment to its lifelong practice. He started an ashram at his native village in East Khandesh of Bombay Province of British India on the model of Gandhiji's Sabarmati Ashram, inspired and organized youth in the district, participated in the freedom struggle and Gandhiji's constructive program of village upliftment and the society based on Gandian values. His choice of devoting to realize the ideals of Sarvodaya (Welfare of All) in the face of opposition from the conservative clique and exploiters of tribals vividly highlights the need for spirituality and service to society. Sub-plot with romantic color and native cultural glimpses is an additional feature of this novel. Almost everyone has sometime or other, a desire to do social service. This novel is, to that extent, the actualization of such a desire.
About the Author: Educated in Marathi medium till S. S. C., Laxman Bhole did his masters in English Literature from the University of Pune, Masters in Philosophy (English Literature) and Masters in Laws from the University of Mumbai. His service as lecturer in English and Business Law, Principal of Mulund College of Commerce and Director of Parle Tilak Vidyalaya Association's Institute of Management and Professional Studies provided him with many opportunities to work as professor-in-charge of National Service Scheme for 13 years under which he organized 'Youth for Rural Reconstruction' camps in villages, chaired two University level inquiry committees, as secretary of University and College Principals' Association assisted in organizing State Level Conference of Principals. He organized a State Level Seminars on Higher Education and a State Level seminar on Impact of GATS on Quality and Transition of Educational Standards. He has written a novelette, "Antarache Antrang" in Marathi. Jointly with Dr. Vilas Sarang he tried his hand at translation of some of Dr. Sarang's stories from English into Marathi. The author fully shares Dr. Bhalchandra Nemade's conviction about writing in mother tongue. However, he succumbed to the temptation to write in English, the reason being hopefully to reach widespread readers. As a trustee of "Hariyali" (Greenery, encompassing a variety of environmental conservation projects), a Non-Government Organization, Bhole has been active after retirement. Social service through another Trust, Vikas Mandal, Mulund (Mumbai) especially under its Rural Education Project satisfied his desire to serve in villages. Presently educational responsibility as Chairman of S. B. Firke Vidyalaya, Thane also claims his attention in addition to his hobby of reading and writing. Travel Group of friends has been facilitating extensive travels in India and abroad. The teaching of his guru, Shri Jangalidas Maharaj of Kokamthan near Shirdi, to meditate and to serve people helped him at difficult times. A native of village of Hingone in Jalgaon district, he lives with his wife in Mulund (East), Mumbai alternating with frequent long stay with his son in Schaumburg, Illinois, U.S.A. He is blessed with two grandchildren, Anisha and Sohum.
