La suspensión de las actividades presenciales en escuelas, universidades y otras instituciones educativas, causada por la pandemia creó una disrupción sin precedentes en la historia de la educación. La humanidad no había vivido antes un momento en el cual, en casi todos los países, la enseñanza formal fuese interrumpida de forma simultánea. Esta interrupción del servicio educativo afecto así a 1.600.000.000 estudiantes en todos los niveles educativos, impactando así de forma directa a casi una quinta parte de la población mundial. Además, el envío de los estudiantes a sus casas tuvo un impacto indirecto sobre sus familias, que ahora tendrían que dedicar más tiempo a la atención, cuidado y educación de los niños y compartir con ellos espacios donde los adultos tendrían que realizar su trabajo, los más afortunados, y en todos los casos compartir la ansiedad generada por la pandemia y sus múltiples efectos.La suspensión de clases fue seguida por formas alternativas de continuidad educativa desarrolladas en muchas jurisdicciones educativas, las cuales incluyeron desde plataformas multimedia para difundir contenidos educativos -radio, televisión, medios digitales, materiales impresos-como formas interactivas a distancia -educación en línea o hibrida-y en algunos casos la reapertura gradual o parcial de las escuelas. El desarrollo de estas modalidades alternativas fue el resultado de la colaboración entre diversos actores, de los sectores público y privado, demostrando así considerable capacidad de innovación por parte del sistema educativo. Igualmente, la suspensión de las actividades regulares escolares permitió un aprecio mayor por la importancia de la escuela y de la labor de los maestros, así como el desarrollo de formas más estrechas de colaboración entre maestros y las familias de los estudiantes.Sin embargo, el mantener dicha continuidad educativa durante la Pandemia y el hacerlo al término de la Pandemia no va a ser sin obstáculos. Serán necesarios mucha creatividad, esfuerzo, innovación y mucho liderazgo para seguir educando con relevancia a los desafíos del presente y del futuro. Las reflexiones que nos ofrecen en este libro quienes están liderando los sistemas educativos en América Latina durante esta época de Pandemia son una muestra fehaciente que en las condiciones enormemente difíciles que ha creado la Pandemia, es posible seguir educando, en particular a los niños que viven condiciones de mayor vulnerabilidad. El tener conciencia de lo que es posible hacer, con todos los medios a nuestro alcance, debería hacernos preguntarnos en medio de esta grave crisis que vive la humanidad entera 'Y yo, que estoy haciendo para mitigar el sufrimiento que esta Pandemia ha causado y para apoyar un liderazgo aún más efectivo?'
