El quinto libro del Aṅguttara Nikāya, la Colección de los Discursos Numerados del Buddha, recoge 1152 suttas o discursos cuya temática se centra en grupos de cinco tópicos. Hay que recordar que los nikayas fueron compuestos para ser transmitidos oralmente en una época donde no se había reintroducido aún en India ningún sistema de escritura. Para ese momento, los antiguos guiones de la arcaica civilización harappa hacía no menos de quince siglos que perdieron su significado y aún a día de hoy siguen sin poder descifrarse.
Recordar era la clave y la redundancia era la garantía para una transmisión exitosa. Todos los suttas encajan en complejos sistemas mnemotécnicos diseñados para ser tolerantes a errores e incluso a la pérdida de datos. Esto no solo sirvió en su día para su correcta transmisión, sino que se convierte en la más poderosa herramienta para el apoyo a la reconstrucción del mensaje. Esto es especialmente importante para El Libro de los Cincos.
Este libro contiene suttas para ser leídos, excepto las matikas finales contenidas en el último capítulo. El contenido no mejora el interés de sus predecesores en la colección numerada, y no desplaza en absoluto a la obra principal, el Saṃyutta Nikaya.
En el apartado de suttas anecdóticos, vuelve a incidir en lo nefasto de los gobernantes, en la línea de los anteriores. En este caso, se recoge la legítima y meritoria defensa de la propia riqueza frente a la lacra de los gobernantes en el AN 5.41 y en el AN 5.148. El AN 5.104 recoge el comportamiento corrupto de los mismos.
Podemos destacar los suttas en los cuales el Buddha denuncia a los falsos bhikkhus que se hacen pasar por tales para vivir de ello, propagando además falsas doctrinas. En AN 5.80 y en el AN 5.167 se habla de aquellos bhikkhus falsos que viven en casas o que se ordenan como un medio bastardo de ganarse la vida. Mensajes que son hoy de plena actualidad.
En el lado de los suttas falsos marcados con doble asterisco (**), nos encontramos esta vez con solo dos suttas falsos.
AN 5.229: Serpientes negras venenosas (I), el Buddha supuestamente confiere a la mujer epítetos como estos:
Es asquerosa, apestosa, cobarde, aterradora y traicionera. Estos son los cinco inconvenientes de una mujer.
AN 5.230: Serpientes negras venenosas (II). Si no parecía suficiente con el anterior, y para que no quede duda del mensaje misógino que le cuelgan al Buddha, el sutta remata a la mujer así
Es irritable, hostil, venenosa, mordaz y traicionera. Este es el veneno de una mujer: normalmente es muy lujuriosa. Esta es la lengua bífida de una mujer: por lo general, habla divisavamente. Esta es la traición de una mujer: normalmente es una adúltera.
En resumen, seguimos en un arduo y exhaustivo trabajo de investigación y reconstrucción en lingüística comparada para desentrañar unos textos parcos de interés.
