Digha Nikāya, la Colección de los Discursos Largos del Buddha, recoge 13 suttas que, en este caso, no vienen correspondiendo a la palabra del Buddha en sí, sino que se trata de composiciones apócrifas ulteriores que acabaron incorporándose como una colección canónica más, cuando obviamente, no lo es.
Mientras que los suttas de la colecciones canónicas: Saṃyutta, Majjhima y Anguttara Nikayas, tienen como objetivo explicar la palabra, la doctrina y la enseñanza del Buddha así como aportar algunos datos circunstanciales, este libro, en cambio, es una compilación heterogénea de diatribas contra las diferentes creencias que chocaron contra el incipiente buddhismo.
Diatriba, del francés diatribe, y éste del griego διατριβή diatribḗ debate, que es el nombre dado a un breve discurso ético, concretamente del tipo de los que componían los filósofos cínicos y estoicos. Estas lecturas morales populares tenían con frecuencia un tono polémico dirigido contra personas o grupos sociales. En este caso, no dejan comunidad, creencia, fe o religión de la época sin atacar.
Este libro parece estar compuesto para ser facilitado a misioneros buddhistas con el fin de utilizarlo como manual de debate contra las otras religiones para así ganar adeptos. Esta es la tónica de casi todos los suttas. Para ello no se desprecia ni la mitomanía ni la milagrería, que tanto han gustado siempre al público indio.
Si estudiamos su estructura, vemos inmediatamente que son completamente ajenos a los canónicos y su contenido, en general, se compone de un libelo contra un grupo religioso, seguido de una serie de corta-pega de suttas canónicos seleccionados sin mucho criterio.
Es por esto que, siendo todos falsos, no tiene sentido señalarlos con el doble asterisco ni listarlos, como se hizo en las colecciones auténticas.
Este libro no se recomienda en ningún caso para nadie interesado en la enseñanza del Buddha, aunque sí puede resultar de cierta utilidad historiográfica para aquellos que quieran estudiar las estrategias que emplearon aquellos monjes buddhistas que fueron dos veces alzados al poder religioso en la India.
Primero, fue la dinastía Maurya y siglos después, la Kushana. Ambas recurrieron al buddhismo para desarticular la sociedad de castas india. Ashoka lo empleará para desarticular a los chatrias y evitar así una rebelión en venganza por sus excesos criminales, mientras que Kanishka lo usa para salir de una enorme crisis monetaria que provocó al tratar de introducir una especie de moneda fíat. Este fracaso le obligó a reimplantar el buddhismo con el fin populista de convertir a los brahmanes, de ricos y respetados sacerdotes, en paganos sospechosos, lo que abría las puertas a la confiscación. Su éxito movió a Constantino a copiar esta misma solución unos años más tarde.
En el colmo de los ridículos, podemos destacar el DN 9. Con Poṭṭhapāda, en donde el desconocido autor se mete en un jardín de flores que del que se muestra incapaz de salir y lo resuelve liándolo todo para que nada quede claro.
En el DN 13. Los Tres Conocimientos, se achaca a los brahmanes los mismos vicios y defectos propios de los monjes buddhistas.
Por último, señalar que es increíble que esta colección sea la más popular entre los buddhistas, lo que ayuda a explicar algunas cosas.
