IV. Gonsidèrerons-nous l'enfant, puis le jeune homme? Le libéralisme, pour l'affranchir dès ses plus tendres années, et pour qu'il reste affranchi pendant tout le cours de sa vie, veut qu'on ne lui parle pas du Dieu Créateur et Père du monde, de la responsabilité de la vie au point de vue du Juge suprème, de ses destinées d'outre - tombe, comme le voulait déjà Rousseau traçant un plan d'éducation pour Emile; il veut que l'instruction soit laïque, c'est-à - dire que l'enseignement religieux soit banni de l'école, que le maitre n'y ait plus le droit de parler de Dieu comme si l'éducation était possible sans la religion, comme si l'éducation sans la religion n'était pas l'abandon de l'enfant a sa perversité originelle, a ses mauvaises passions naissantes et bientôt brûlantes, et n'aboutissait pas a son immolation sur les autels du vice; comme si les choses divines n'étaient pas un élément essentiel des choses humaines, comme si pour faire contrepoids au poids de la mauvaise nature, nous entraînant fatalement au mal, il ne fallait pas Dieu et l'éternité. De la la haine de l'éducation chrétienne, parce que le christia nisme pose en principe que la conscience relève de la loi divine, et que la morale, loin d'ètre chose conventionnelle, arbitraire et facultative, a un caractère l'absolu qui, dans ses principes généraux, la rend obligatoire partout et tou jours, de telle sorte que Si l'homme peut s'y soustraire par l'abus de sa liberté, il n'a pas le droit de le faire.
