About the Book

A study of the fictional world of two writers of the same nation and of the same ethnic culture separated by space and time with related cultures will enable us to understand one important factor, that the raw material or the source material is the same. ie. human nature and human society. The book discusses the lives and the literary works of Anita Nair and Manju Kapur, and stresses that all the women are likely to be liberated through the writings of the feminist novelists such as Anita Nair and Manju Kapur. The women novelists of the recent past are aware of the need of women to become equal partners and to live together in mutual respect. In their novels, they create such women characters who are strivers, aspirers and achievers of freedom, goodness and self-identity. The virtue of these characters is a quality of heart, mind and spirit. In their novels, there is an in-depth study and psychological analysis of the ordinary Indian women and their needs and aspirations are being given gentle treatment, while their emancipation from the parental and patriarchal tyranny is highlighted with irony and humour. Following the footprints of other novelists, Anita Nair and Manju Kapur are quite conscious of the hardships and problems of women and they are disturbed at the way the Indian women are being treated in the patriarchal society and are forced to undergo the suppressions and oppressions of the male dominated society. Anita Nair in her novels, Ladies Coupe, Mistress and Lessons in Forgetting and Manju Kapur in her novels, Difficult Daughters, A Married Women and Home place their protagonists with good educational background and they are seen indulging in conflict with the patriarchal society. Their protagonists revolt against the concept of women as toys and objects of pleasure. They raise their voices loud and clear against the suppression and oppression of the patriarchal society. They have succeeded in changing the face of Indian woman in accordance with the modernity of dynamic change. It is these issues the book explores as comprehensively as possible.
