L'esprit et le génie. Ce sont les deux points où consiste la réputation de l'homme. Avoir l'un sans l'autre, ce n'est être heureux qu'à demi. Ce n'est pas assez que d'avoir bon entendement, il faut encore du génie. C'est le malheur ordinaire des malhabiles gens de se tromper dans le choix de leur profession, de leurs amis, et de leur demeure. Ne se point ouvrir, ni déclarer. L'admiration que l'on a pour la nouveauté est ce qui fait estimer les succès. Il n'y a point d'utilité, ni de plaisir, à jouer à jeu découvert. De ne se pas déclarer incontinent, c'est le moyen de tenir les esprits en suspens, surtout dans les choses importantes, qui font l'objet de l'attente universelle. Cela fait croire qu'il y a du mystère en tout, et le secret excite la vénération. Dans la manière de s'expliquer, on doit éviter de parler trop clairement; et, dans la conversation, il ne faut pas toujours parler à coeur ouvert. Le silence est le sanctuaire de la prudence. Une résolution déclarée ne fut jamais estimée. Celui qui se déclare s'expose à la censure, et, s'il ne réussit pas, il est doublement malheureux. Il faut donc imiter le procédé de Dieu, qui tient tous les hommes en suspens. Le savoir et la valeur font réciproquement les grands hommes. Ces deux qualités rendent les hommes immortels, parce qu'elles le sont. L'homme n'est grand qu'autant qu'il sait; et, quand il sait, il peut tout. L'homme qui ne sait rien, c'est le monde en ténèbres. La prudence et la force sont ses yeux et ses mains. La science est stérile, si la valeur ne l'accompagne. Se rendre toujours nécessaire. Ce n'est pas le doreur qui fait un Dieu, c'est l'adorateur. L'homme d'esprit aime mieux trouver des gens dépendants que des gens reconnaissants. Tenir les gens en espérance, c'est courtoisie; se fier à leur reconnaissance, c'est simplicité. Car il est aussi ordinaire à la reconnaissance d'oublier, qu'à l'espérance de se souvenir. Vous tirez toujours plus de celle-ci que de l'autre. Dès que l'on a bu, l'on tourne le dos à la fontaine; dès qu'on a pressé l'orange, on la jette à terre. Quand la dépendance cesse, la correspondance cesse aussi, et l'estime avec elle. C'est donc une leçon de l'expérience, qu'il faut faire en sorte qu'on soit touj ours nécessaire, et même à son prince; sans donner pourtant dans l'excès de se taire pour faire manquer les autres, ni rendre le mal d'autrui incurable pour son propre intérêt.
