Résumé Le banquier Favraux a su profiter du scandale de Panama en conservant des documents qui lui permettent de garder la haute main sur des personnages influents. Cependant des lettres lui enjoignant de restituer l'argent volé lui parviennent, envoyées par le mystérieux Judex. Loin de les restituer, Favraux tente de supprimer un témoin de son infamie, mais, à la soirée des fiançailles de sa fille Jacqueline, une syncope le terrasse comme l'en avait menacé Judex. Jacqueline renseignée par Vallières, le secrétaire de son père, refuse tout héritage et rompt ses fiançailles. Cependant le banquier n'est pas mort, et Judex le séquestre. Interviennent alors deux aventuriers: Moralès et Diana Monti qui cherchent à s'emparer des papiers compromettants. Jacqueline les surprend. Abusée par Diana Monti qui se dissimule sous la robe d'une religieuse, elle court les plus grands périls. Les bandits parviennent d'autre part à enlever Favraux qu'ils soupçonnaient d'être en vie; Judex est heureusement là pour sauver Jacqueline qui comprend que le justicier et Vallières ne font qu'un. Les péripéties s'accélèrent; Favraux retrouvé par Judex finit par se suicider. Diana Monti poignarde par erreur son complice et, en fuyant sur les toits, tombe dans le vide. Vallières aimait Jacqueline depuis toujours et celle-ci accorde sa main à Judex. Arthur Bernède, né à Redon (Ille-et-Vilaine) le 5 janvier 1871 et mort à Paris le 20 mars 1937, est un romancier populaire français. Auteur très prolifique, il a publié près de 200 romans d'aventures et d'histoire et créé plusieurs centaines de personnages romanesques, dont certains, devenus très célèbres, tels que Belphégor, Judex et Mandrin, ont effacé leur créateur. Il a également mis en scène Vidocq, inspiré par les exploits de ce chef de la Sûreté haut en couleur. Il est également connu sous les noms de plume de Jean de la Périgne et de Roland d'Albret. Biographie Son père, appelé également Arthur Bernède, était un rentier passionné d'agriculture. Sa mère s'appelait Laure du Rocher de la Périgne. Son grand-père avait été procureur du roi et ami de Surcouf. Arthur connut une enfance heureuse dans la belle maison familiale au bord du canal de Nantes à Brest, et devint bachelier en 1889 après de brillantes études au collège des Eudistes, Saint-Sauveur à Redon, durant lesquelles il écrivit des pièces en vers et des poèmes. En 1890, attiré par une carrière lyrique, il monta à Paris pour y faire ses classes au conservatoire, et il eut pour professeurs Gabriel Fauré et Benjamin Godard. Le soir, au Café du Soleil d'Or, place Saint-Michel, il accompagnait au piano des chansonniers débutants. Au sortir du Conservatoire, il débuta avec succès une carrière de chanteur lyrique, mais il fut victime d'accident vocal qui lui interdit la carrière lyrique dont il rêvait. Il se reconvertit alors en librettiste et participa à la création de plusieurs opéras, opéras-bouffe et pièces lyriques. Il écrivit aussi quelques pièces de théâtre et des monologues. En 1892, il publia un premier recueil de nouvelles, Les contes à Nicette En 1894, il fit un premier mariage et eut une fille. Il divorcera en 1900 et se remariera en 1910. De 1897 à 1901, il travailla à l'hôtel de ville de Paris, mais il fut renvoyé, après un scandale diplomatique.
