Il y a probablement des centaines de siècles que l'Homme s'est répandu sur la terre. Au-delà de 2.500 ans, les origines de la France se perdent dans les conjectures et dans la nuit. Une vaste période ténébreuse précède notre histoire. Déjà, sur le sol de notre pays, des migrations et des conquètes s'étaient succédé, jusqu'au moment où les Gaëls ou Gaulois devinrent les maîtres, chassant les occupants qu'ils avaient trouvés ou se mèlant à eux. Ces occupants étaient les Ligures et les Ibères, bruns et de stature moyenne, qui constituent encore le fond de la population française. La tradition des druides enseignait qu'une partie des Gaulois était indigène, l'autre venue du Nord et d'Outre-Rhin, car le Rhin a toujours paru la limite des Gaules. Ainsi, la fusion des races a commencé dès les âges préhistoriques. Le peuple français est un composé. C'est mieux qu'une race. C'est une nation. Unique en Europe, la conformation de la France se prètait à tous les échanges de courants, ceux du sang, ceux des idées. La France est un isthme, une voie de grande communication entre le Nord et le Midi. Il y avait, avant la conquète romaine, de prodigieuses différences entre la colonie grecque de Marseille et les Cimbres d'entre Seine et Loire ou les Belges d'entre Meuse et Seine. D'autres éléments, au cours des siècles, se sont ajoutés en grand nombre à ceux-là. Le mélange s'est formé peu à peu, ne laissant qu'une heureuse diversité. De là viennent la richesse intellectuelle et morale de la France, son équilibre, son génie. On dit communément que, dans cette contrée fertile, sur ce territoire si bien dessiné, il devait y avoir un grand peuple. On prend l'effet pour la cause. Nous sommes habitués à voir à cet endroit de la carte un État dont l'unité et la solidité sont presque sans exemple. Cet État ne s'est pas fait tout seul. Il ne s'est pas fait sans peine. Il s'est fait de main d'homme. Plusieurs fois il s'est écroulé, mais il a été rebâti. La combinaison France nous paraît naturelle. Il y a eu, il aurait pu y avoir bien d'autres combinaisons.
