Dans son Discours historique, l'Armenien Lewond raconte comment Muhammad et ses successeurs conquirent non seulement l'Armenie, mais l'univers. Posant l'expansion de l'islam comme un phenomene universel, l'auteur relate le sort de son pays, depuis la mort de Muhammad et celle d'Heraclius (641), jusqu'en 789. Selon lui, les Arabes ont poursuivi des le debut le dessein de destructurer la societe armenienne, d'exploiter le territoire et les populations soumises, en creant un contexte defavorable a la vie chretienne. Il apporte ainsi des informations uniques sur l'Armenie, tout en exposant ses propres points de vue sur les califes, les conquetes, les guerres civiles ou le passage des Omeyyades aux Abbassides. Effectuee sur un texte critique etabli par Alexan Hakobian, qui respecte les divisions de chapitres et les titres les plus anciens, la traduction a ete conjointement elaboree par Jean-Pierre Mahe et Bernadette Martin-Hisard. Cette derniere est la principale responsable des annotations a caractere historique qui accompagnent la traduction, ainsi que des pages qui lui font suite, consacrees a l'oeuvre de Lewond, sa date et son dessein. Bien des donnees du texte plaident en faveur de la datation, recemment contestee, a la fin du VIIIe siecle. L'auteur ne s'efforce pas seulement de relater les changements imposes a son pays par l'arrivee des Arabes; il presente aussi sa chronique comme l'Enseignement spirituel qu'on peut attendre d'un theologien s'adressant a des fideles, desorientes par des evenements sans precedent. Au-dela de son interpretation biblique, Lewond, sensible au sort de la population, est un des premiers auteurs armeniens a s'interroger sur la guerre et sur la domination califale: faut-il se revolter, se soumettre ou temporiser? On ne saurait dire avec certitude si son opinion est celle de certains milieux aristocratiques ou des autorites de l'Eglise, ce qui est le plus probable. Son oeuvre invite aussi a reconsiderer les relations entre monde armenien et monde byzantin au VIIIe siecle. En annexe on trouvera une Correspondance apocryphe d'Omar II et de Leon III, inseree ulterieurement dans le Discours historique de Lewond. La version armenienne de ce debat theologique entre le christianisme et l'islam est presentee, traduite et annotee par Jean-Pierre Mahe, qui a confronte l'armenien a la redaction arabe de la Lettre d'Omar (IXe-Xe s.).
