About the Book

A Letter to Feminists is a powerful and eye-opening essay that highlights the troubles that African women face today. It is an emotionally charged essay that highlights the struggles of one marginalized group: African women. The book tackles everything from genital mutilation and extreme patriarchy to barbaric occultic practices, and many other issues which afflict these women. A Letter To Feminists brings attention to those who have been ignored for so long-the sisters in Africa who need our voice as much as we do theirs.

While European feminists advocate for body positivity, many African women are still not allowed to go to school, divorce their husbands, and hold certain political positions.

Nate Haliv writes: ON THE EXCLUSION OF AFRICAN WOMEN FROM WOMEN'S HISTORY"In 1963, Betty Friedan published her book titled The Feminine Mystique. In the book, she described the problem herself and other middle-class white women faced during that period- a problem that had no name. It is almost impossible to study any course on feminism without reading about Betty Friedan.

During that same period when Betty Friedan battled with a nameless problem, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a Nigerian Feminist, fought against the colonialists, military dictatorship, and toxic African patriarchy before she was assassinated by a bunch of soldiers who were desperate to silence the woman who failed to realize that her place was in the kitchen. Yet, the middle-class white woman who could not identify her problem is one of the most-studied women in feminism, while the black women who resisted Idi Amin, Sani Abacha, and the British empire are nowhere to be found in feminist studies.

Isn't it ironic that a woman who could not identify her problem is regarded as a more influential woman in feminist studies than the black queens who actively fought against slavery, colonialism, military dictatorship, genital mutilation, and toxic patriarchy?

What about the powerful Yaa Asantewaa from Ghana? The powerful Ghanaian woman who led the Ashanti in a war against British colonization. The brave woman was exiled from her own country by the British after she lost the war. However, I never came across Yaa Asantewaa in any feminist course I took during my studies (I took at least six courses on feminism). Imagine fighting against patriarchy, colonialism, and being exiled from your own country, yet you are not considered an ideal woman worthy of being studied in schools.

Imagine if a white woman had single-handedly stood against Hitler and led an army to defeat him, she would have been romanticized, and her name would never be forgotten in history. Yet, Yaa Asantewaa, the brave Ghanaian woman who single-handedly resisted the British empire and led an army to fight the heavily-armed British soldiers, something even the most powerful male African rulers were scared to do, is not included in the feminist discourse. Why? Probably because she was born with the wrong skin color on the wrong continent."
