Cette nouvelle édition unique contient deux oeuvres majeures de Jonathan Swift en bilingue (Français / Anglais):1- Les Voyages de Gulliver (Gulliver's Travels, 1721) traduit par Pierre-François Guyot Desfontaines (1932), illustré par16 dessins de Paul Gavarni. (pseudonyme de Sulpice-Guillaume Chevalier, né à Paris le 13 janvier 18041, et mort en 1866, dessinateur, aquarelliste et lithographe français, nommé chevalier de la Légion d'honneur en 1852).La version anglaise est illustrée par Arthur Rackham, (19 septembre 1867 - 6 septembre 1939), est un artiste britannique, illustrateur de nombreux livres.Rackham gagne la médaille d'or à l'exposition universelle de Milan en 1906 et une autre à l'exposition internationale de Barcelone en 1911. Ses oeuvres font l'objet de nombreuses expositions, notamment au Louvre (Paris) en 1914. Membre de la Royal Watercolour Society, il est nommé Maître de l'Art Workers' Guild en 1919. Il fut un collaborateur du magazine pour enfants Little Folks.En appendices: Extrait d'un Pamphlet sur l'Irlande suivi d'illustrations sur Brobdingnag, Houyhnhnm, Laputa, Lilliputien, Yahoo.Les Voyages de Gulliver marquent un sommet de la satire sociale et politique au travers d'éléments mêlant, sur le mode du pamphlet ou de la description narrative, de la philosophie, de la logique, du fantastique et de la science-fiction. Cette oeuvre, écrite à la première personne, est divisée en quatre parties: le voyage à Lilliput, qui représente la cité des nains; le voyage à Brobdingnag, qui représente la cité des géants; le voyage à Laputa; le voyage au pays des Houyhnhnms.2- Modeste proposition pour empêcher les enfants des pauvres en Irlande d'être à la charge de leurs parents ou de leur pays et pour les rendre utiles au public (titre original: A Modest Proposal: For Preventing the Children of Poor People in Ireland from Being a Burden to Their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Public), plus communément intitulé Modeste Proposition, est un pamphlet publié anonymement par Jonathan Swift en 1729. Traduction par Léon de Wailly (1859)Ce discours argumentatif utilise implicitement l'ironie. L'auteur propose en effet de réduire la misère et la surpopulation qui touchent l'Irlande du XVIIIe siècle en se servant des nourrissons comme source d'alimentation. Il affirme ainsi que: En supposant que mille familles de cette ville deviennent des acheteurs réguliers de viande de nourrisson, sans parler de ceux qui pourraient en consommer à l'occasion d'agapes familiales, mariages et baptêmes en particulier, j'ai calculé que Dublin offrirait un débouché annuel d'environ vingt mille pièces. L'auteur dresse dans ce texte un réquisitoire contre les riches Anglais et brosse une critique féroce de la situation sociale de son pays. Ce texte a été désigné comme pierre angulaire de l'humour noir par Isaac Asimov et figure au premier chapitre de l'Anthologie de l'humour noir d'André Breton, selon qui tout désigne [Swift] comme le véritable initiateur . Il a également fortement inspiré Jean-Olivier Héron pour l'écriture de son propre pamphlet se rapportant au conflit israélo-palestinien, intitulé Modeste proposition pour garantir la sécurité d'Israël et le bien-être des Palestiniens en attendant la paix qui s'ensuivra peut-être. Le texte de Jonathan Swift s'y trouve proposé en annexe. L'auteur y reprend le principe de la proposition moralement absurde pour dénoncer une situation choquante.
