Les conceptions relatives a la vie de cour traduites par les ecrivains de France (en langue francaise et en langue latine) sous la dynastie des premiers Valois (1328-1498) constituent un theme litteraire d'une importance primordiale. Elles attestent deux attitudes - l'attitude procuriale et l'attitude anticuriale - et temoignent de deux mentalites. La mentalite medievale, a travers laquelle se manifestent a la fois de l'attrait ou du mepris pour la vie de cour, revele de la part des gens de lettres une croyance confiante au progres moral de l'homme. A l'oppose, la mentalite humaniste verse dans un pessimisme assez constant qui denie, au moins theoriquement, toute valeur a l'existence curiale et qui prone un comportement de repli sur soi fonde sur l'exaltation de la liberte individuelle et sur le culte du moi renforce par la pratique des belles-lettres. Jusqu'ici, les historiens des mentalites avaient neglige les aspects essentiels de la litterature medievale favorable au destin des gens de cour. Aussi, une part importante de ce livre est reservee a l'etude des ecrivains qui plaident la cause des milieux curiaux, en general des hommes de lettres professionnels, et qui exaltent les valeurs intellectuelles et esthetiques vecues par l'aristocratie ou qui fournissent des justifications morales a l'existence mondaine. Seduite par les ideaux traditionnels de la chevalerie et de la courtoisie, la noblesse de cour va progressivement changer de statut: le vassal, lie au depart a son suzerain par un lien personnel, se mue bientot en homme de cour. Puis, a la fin du XVe siecle, quand l'aristocratie sera depouillee de ses prerogatives, apparait le courtisan, ou membre (souvent roturier) de la suite du prince appele a defendre par des moyens quelquefois peu avouables la faveur qu'il a conquise. Au-dela des aspects moraux de la censure de cour, assez bien mis en lumiere jusqu'ici, le present ouvrage s'attache a considerer les perspectives sociales de cette critique. Si la personne royale est generalement epargnee par les blames des bourgeois ou du peuple, la noblesse et le clerge voient leurs comportements denonces avec une sourcilleuse severite. Dans l'ensemble, les auteurs inspires par la mentalite medievale manifestent une conviction determinee dans un possible amendement des esprits. A l'inverse, prenant appui sur le sentiment personnel de la satietas curiae, la critique humaniste de la vie en cour montre moins de confiance dans le perfectionnement moral des etres et comprend un caractere individualiste affirme. Inspire par l'Italie, renforce par des reactions nationalistes a l'oeuvre de Petarque, ce mouvement intellectuel revet souvent les atours d'un jeu litteraire: les plus virulents contempteurs de la vie curiale sont aussi des membres de chancellerie tres fideles a leur maitre... L'etude des visions de la vie de cour atteste la grande richesse de la pensee litteraire au XIVe et au XV siecle. Cette epoque nourrit une grande fermentation intellectuelle et, a travers deux mentalites assez contradictoires, illustre l'eternelle grandeur de l'homme.
