Comme il avait été obligé de revenir dans sa famille, l'archevèque de Vienne le vit, et reconnut que sa réputa tion n'était pas exagérée; pour acquérir à son diocèse un sujet aussi précieux, ille nomma son grand - vicaire. L'hum ble prètre voulut en vain décliner une distinction si dange reuse, l'obéissance ne lui permit pas de résister à un ordre formel de son supérieur légitime. Déjà il se iésignait à ses nouvelles fonctions et se préparait à les remplir digne ment, lorsque l'archevèque le demanda et l'obtint pour coadjuteur.
